The phone ringing nearly gave me a heart attack.
I groaned and rolled over, dragging a pillow over my head like it could muffle the aggressive, clunky ringing of my nightstand phone — obnoxiously pink and somehow louder than a freight train.
I squinted at the ceiling, trying to piece together where I was, what time it was, and why my body felt like it had been hit by an emotional truck. Then I remembered.
Will. My boyfriend.
Oh yeah.
The stupidest, dopiest smile spread across my face before I could stop it, and I threw off my blankets like I'd just woken from a Disney princess coma.
I reached over and yanked the phone off the receiver with a sleepy, "hullo?"
"Y/N?" Lucas's voice. Loud. "Finally. Did you die?"
"Jesus," I mumbled, scrubbing my face. "No. I was sleeping."
"you didn't answer your super-com. Again," Dustin chimed in. "We tried, like, three times."
"we even beeped the long one. The long one, Y/N."
I sat up straighter and turned to the blinking red dot of my static super-com on the desk across the room. I must've left the volume all the way down. Oops.
"Sorry," I muttered. "Long night."
Lucas snorted. "Yeah, we heard."
I blinked. "Heard what?"
"Heard." Dustin emphasised, voice giddy. "You and Will. Together. For real."
I felt my face heat instantly. "who told you?"
"Max told me, I told Dustin, Dustin told Mike, Mike told El, and we called Will and confirmed it—"
"Oh my god," I muttered, dragging my hands down my face. "You guys are such old ladies."
"we're your friends," Lucas countered, "and we're coming over, Will's already on his way. Max too. Mike said he couldn't, but whatever,"
"We're swimming!" Dustin added cheerfully.
"wait— what?" I looked toward my window, where the blinds were drawn tight against the midmorning sun.
"...it's literally—" I checked the clock and froze. "Oh. It's twelve—."
"See you soon!" Click.
I sat there, stunned, phone still in hand. The house was quiet except for birds outside and the faint hum of the air conditioner. I sighed dramatically and fell back into the mattress, letting my limbs sprawl like a crime scene.
First day of being in a relationship and they were already coming to hog my pool. Typical.
I dragged myself out of bed, still in my faded Hawkins high t-shirt and pyjama shorts, hair sticking out at odd angles. I didn't even bother checking my reflection before padding out into the hallway, yawning and stretching as I made my way toward the kitchen.
Steve was already up, sitting at the counter with a bowl of cereal, flipping through the comics section like he was sixty. He didn't even glance up when I shuffled in.
"Morning," I grumped, pulling open the fridge.
He looked over the top of the newspaper, deadpan. "It's noon."
"Morning for me," I clarified, through a yawn.
I leaned against the fridge door, cold air spilling out around me."So, uh... just a heads up. The group is coming over."
