Eyes wide open

Outside an apartment, a boy walked slowly toward school, dreading the bullies-and the teachers who acted like bullies too. It wasn't like he could run away; after the scolding he'd gotten yesterday from his caretaker, he had no desire to face that terrifying glare again anytime soon.

As he made his way down the sidewalk, he didn't notice someone creeping up behind him-not until the figure suddenly leapt onto him, wrapping their arms around his chest in a tight squeeze. He yelped in surprise, not expecting to see her until after school.

"O-Oi, I thought you didn't wake up until the evening," he said, turning to the girl. She was dressed the same as always-short, choppy black hair with spiky layers, bright blue eyes, and a pink bubble of gum swelling between her lips. She wore a black crop top, a short black skirt, and chunky black combat boots with blue laces. A black choker, an arm bracelet, and a simple bracelet on her other wrist completed the look. Cordelia Frost-one of his best friends.

"Well, I got bored waiting for your sorry ass," she said with a smirk. "So I thought, why not try going to school for once? I mean, can they really deny me-a student-from entering?" She opened her jacket slightly in an exaggerated fashion.

"Well... yeah, they still can deny you," the boy said, pointing at her.

"They can try," she replied, before grabbing his arm and dragging them both in the wrong direction to school. He eventually managed to stop her and steer her back on track, but the two were so caught up in talking that they didn't notice the smoke rising in the distance-or the danger heading toward the school.

After a few more blocks, they finally arrived. Just as they were about to enter, the bell rang, making them both question whether stopping for Slurpees had been a good idea.

They exchanged a look, then bolted into the hallways, shoving each other for the lead and laughing the whole way. After a few near falls down the stairs, they reached their classroom.

Peering through the small glass window in the door, they spotted the teacher with her head resting on the desk. Luck was on their side-it was Miss Krabappel, the most laid-back teacher in the school, who probably had five too many drinks last night.

They strolled right in, instantly swallowed by the noise of the rowdiest class in their grade.

On their way to the back, they were stopped by another friend-Jessica Vale. She had straight, dark hair with a teal-blue sheen, cut into a chin-length bob with slightly longer strands framing her face and layered ends in the back. Her fair skin and calm, neutral expression suited her light blue shirt and jeans.

"I expected you to be a little late," Jessica said, hands in her pockets. "But not this late... and especially not with her." She nodded toward Cordelia with a pointed smile.

"Well, I couldn't let my bestie walk alone, could I?" Cordelia replied, pinching the boy's cheek. He shook her off in frustration, which only made her giggle.

"Nah, she was just lonely without me around," the boy said, settling into his seat at the back.
