013 - SO.. BYE, I GUESS?

"hey." she said.

"hey."

he didn't pause the video.

she hovered in the doorway for a second, then walked in and sat at the edge of the bed. not close to him, but far away enough that it felt like they were in two different conversations.

there was a beat of silence, the kind that wasn't heavy or meaningful, just sort of.. there. like dead air on a phone call.

"so," nicole said finally, "i.. think we should start seeing other people."

that got conrad to pause the video. he looked over at her. not surprised. not sad. just.. confirming?

"yeah," the boy said. "okay."

the richardson girl blinked. "okay?"

he shrugged a little, sitting up. "i mean.. yeah. i figured that's where it was heading."

there was no resistance, no big speech about 'it's not you it's me'. just two people calling time on something they'd both already walked out of in their heads.

"you've been weird." the brunette boy added. "i've been weird. we haven't really hung out, like.. in a real way in weeks."

at the weird look nicole gave him, he continued. "we literally spent the last time we saw each other sitting on opposite sides of the couch looking at our phones. and you didn't even say bye. i figured we were over already."

"i said 'see ya'!"

"same thing."

they both gave a kind of half-laugh. not because it was funny, but because it was either that or sit in silence again.

the richardson girl brushed her hands on her jeans and stood up.

"well, that's that i guess. we're over."

conrad nodded. "guess so."

there was nothing else to say. no drama, no blame. just a quiet agreement that whatever they'd had had kind of fizzled out without anyone noticing until now.

and that was it. she left, closing the door gently behind her, and he went back to his show like he'd just taken out the trash or answered a boring email. it wasn't sad. it wasn't dramatic. it was just.. over.

and weirdly, that felt okay.
