The next day everyone is surrounded by their parents as Hunter has finished his explaining where he thinks his root comes from. Miss Lynn on the other hand is not impressed.
Miss Lynn: Hunter, that's what kids do after swimming lessons. Change. Everybody does that.
Hunter: But I took one look at those boys, and I got a... you know what.
Nicole's mother looks surprised and she quickly clears her throat.
Jeffery: I, um can relate to that. Um, when I used to study with one of my friends, we used to touch each other's legs and rub up against each other.
Jecka's father is shocked to hear that and decides to but into the conversation.
Jecka's Dad: Blowing each other after a fucking study session is a little different than learning how to dog paddle.
Jecka looks at her father with offendedly. Jeffery's father then replies back towards Jecka's father.
Jeffery's Dad: That is totally uncalled for.
Jecka's Dad: Well, excuse me but we're paying a lot of money here to get these kids fixed not sit around and listen to stories all day.
Jecka didn't like what her father said and uncomfortably shifted away from him somewhat. Nicole looks at her with a sadden expression.
Jecka's Dad: Jessica, I hope your getting a little more out of this program than that faggot over there.
Miss Lynn: Mr. Eaton, I don't find that appropriate.
Hunter: No, he's right. It was a stupid ass root. I'm never gonna know why I'm a... faggot.
Hunter starts to tear up as his parents console him.
Jecka's dad: I've heard enough of this crap. When you get back from Switzerland, you better have this gay thing out of your system got it?
Jecka nods.
Jecka: I got it.
Jecka's dad gets up and turns to his daughter.
Jecka's dad: You fuck up, no college, no car, no trust fund.
Jecka's father and her step mother, who had been sitting in silence the whole time leave the building. Nicole watches as it happens with a somewhat aggravated look on her face. Jecka follows them but only to watch them leave. Nicole turns around and looks out the window behind.
Jecka's Dad: I'm not sitting in any room with a faggot.
Jecka looks on from the porch with a hard to read expression. As her father and step mother leave she turns around and goes back inside.
Miss Lynn: Nicole, it's your turn to report out your root.
Nicole: I think it be my parents.
Miss Lynn: Okay, go with that.
Nicole: You how when I was younger we kinda been like the family you see on greeting cards? And then there was the year when dad committed suicide right in front of me after the divorce then you had to support us mom.
Nicole's Mom: Wait a minute that was last year before we moved here to northern Virginia. And then I've had a few boyfriends on and off to help support us.
Nicole: Well, maybe it was seeing you kind of being the bread winner. Maybe I-- maybe I kinda got the wrong idea about the roles of men and women?
Miss Lynn: Absolutely. You can't believe you didn't mention this earlier. Your father's suicide and your mother became a source of income.
