12 • Fade Into You

Start from the beginning

Dominic laughed and took it off, then smushed it onto her head. "There. Now its your problem."

"You look like you got kicked out of a band for having too many feelings," He added.

She flipped him off, but couldn't stop the laugh that burst out of her. He handed her a lemonade, swear dripping down his neck. "Don't die of heatstroke. I need someone to carry me if my leg gives out."

And right there, standing outside a gas station, sunburned and dehydrated, wearing the dumbest hat in the world, Macy knew.

She loved him. Quietly. Hopelessly. Without saying a word.

June 20th, 2023

She blinked and was back in her room. The sun was sinking. Her phone buzzed again, but she didn't look. She turned the hat over once more, then placed it carefully on her bed like it was made of glass.

She hesitated, then put it back on. Took a picture. Sent it Dominic with no caption.

Back to reality, she eventually found Zora's shirt under an avalanche of hoodies. She grabbed her keys and left.

On the way to Zora's, her phone buzzed again.

Dom
lmfaooo no way
you done bullying me
for that hat now?

Macy
oh i was planning on it
actually

Macy smiled and tucked her phone in her purse.

Zora opened the door with a dramatic gasp "Macy! You're alive!"

"I missed you, drama queen," Macy said, wrapping her in a tight hug.

They plopped on the couch. Macy gave her the full Florida download, from Apple's constant teasing to Jessicas chaotic playlists.

"And now..." she hesitated, "I think i'm in love with him."

Zora's jaw dropped. "Oh my god. Took you long enough!"

Macy groaned. "I don't know what to do. I'm not ready for a relationship. But I don't want to lose him. What if  saying something ruins everything?"

Zora shrugged. "Then don't confess. Just... tell him how you feel. It doesn't have to be dramatic. Just be honest."

Macy nodded, biting the inside of her cheek. "You're right."

Zora stood up. "Okay, enough feelings. Lets dance."

She cranked up the music and they spun around the living room until they were laughing too hard to breathe.

Later that night, Macy drove alone, windows down, music loud. Everything sounded like him. Every lyric sounded like a knife and hug at the same time.

Maybe it was time to talk.

The next morning, she showered, picked out a cute outfit, and did her makeup like she had somewhere important to be. Because she did,

She called Dominic.

"Hey." He said, standing in his kitchen, looking better than he had any right to.

"Hey," She said, trying not to grin. "Can we talk?"

He raised his eyebrows. "Uh oh."

She laughed. "Relax. It's nothing bad."

"Oh, you're just desperate to see me again?"

"Obviously."

After a few more jokes, she was in her car, then at the door.

"Finally." he said, opening it. "You look nice."

"So do you." She tried to hide her blush and failed.

They sat on the couch. He handed her a Dr Pepper without asking.

"So..."  he said.

"I don't know how to say this. I really like you. Like really. But i'm not ready for anything serious."

Dominic nodded. "I know. I feel the same. Thats why... we should probably just be friends. For now."

Macy looked down at the floor, heart sinking.
"Yeah, I get it."

His eyes softened. "Hey. Who knows what will happen though, right?"

She nodded, even though she didn't know what he meant. She wanted to rewind to Florida. When things felt easy.

They sat in silence for a minute until Dominic picked up the remote.

"Pitch Perfect 2?" She said asked.

He rolled his eyes. "Obsessed."

"Fully."

Halfway through, he casually rested his arm around her shoulders. Her heart jumped.

Just friends.

Right.
