"Blue's been kinda distant" Beyoncé said to her husband, who was away on business. They were talking on the phone.
"Did you talk to her about it?" he asked. He wanted to believe he had a close relationship with his daughter, but he also acknowledged that his daughter and wife shared a special connection of their own.
"No, not yet," she replied.
"Is this a two-parent thing?" he asked.
"No, I think a mommy-and-me talk will do," she said.
"Well, let me know if you change your mind. I fly home first thing tomorrow morning," he offered. Their conversation then veered off to other topics. After their phone call, Beyoncé decided to go find her eldest daughter, who had barricaded herself in her room for most of the day.
"Blue, baby?" Beyoncé softly called as she knocked on her child's door.
"Yes, mom," she softly sighed, taking her blue AirPod Max headphones off. She knew her mom well so, she could sense that this visit to her room wouldn't be short.
"Are you feeling okay, baby?" her mother asked.
"I'm fine," Blue answered.
"You've been a little distant these past few days. I'm just checking on you," her mother pointed out.
Blue simply shrugged. Oh, the joys of trying to talk to a teenager, Beyoncé thought to herself.
"You can tell me whatever it is," she implored.
Blue thought it was silly. She didn't want to share the reason for her distance. So, instead of telling her mother what was wrong, she softly shook her head no.
"You'll feel better," her mother urged. Blue felt she had a good group of friends that she could trust and talk to about mostly anything. But there were certain things about her life that only a few people could understand. She knew her mom would understand her predicament if she'd just come out with it.
"It's hitting you a little harder this time, huh?" Beyoncé asked, already knowing the true reason behind her daughter's distance.
"Yeah," Blue let out a sigh of relief.
"Why didn't you want to tell me that?"
"I thought it was kinda silly," Blue admitted.
"Your feelings are valid, I understand how you feel. Aside from school and volleyball, you've lived and breathed this. From the halftime show to now, it's been a journey." Even she was getting a little emotional as she reminisced. Blue let some tears fall as she rested her head on her mother's shoulder.
"Aww, baby, it's okay," she embraced her daughter. "I'm so proud of you. You've grown so much. I think the reason the end is hitting you so hard is because it's technically your first full tour. You were really involved this time around. Goodbyes are always hard, but it's not the end." She wiped some tears from her baby's face. "And you'll be back as long as you still want to do it and you're going about it the right way. You know, you're always welcome."
She nodded knowingly. Blue lifted her head off her mom's shoulder.
"Are you ready to turn off the Olivia Rodrigo music and come back into society?" Her mom joked.
She smirked and shook her head yes.
"Blue!" Rumi yelled as she walked by her big sister's door. "Your door is open. Does that mean you feel better?"
"Yes, Rumi," Blue chuckled.
"I'll be sad when the tour is over too. I'm going to miss my fans," Rumi empathized with her sister.
They probably should have been stunned at the eight-year-old's comment, but at this point, there aren't many things Rumi could say that would surprise them.
"Are you ready to go swimming?" Beyoncé asked her youngest daughter, changing the subject (Rumi could talk about her fans all day).
"Yes, Blue Blue, are you coming?" Rumi asked.
"Yes, I am," she smiled at her younger sister.
Her mom and sister began to leave the room, giving her privacy to change for the pool.
"And don't forget to bathe first, Blue," Rumi said as she skipped out of her sister's room.
Blue turned up her face at her little sister's shady comment. Blue skipped a few showers as she sulked in her bedroom, she could admit that but her little sister didn't have to put her business in the streets like that.
Beyoncé sped up as she walked out of the room. She put her head down and fought the urge to laugh as she headed to the pool.
"Rumi, come on, let your sister get ready," she called to her unfiltered child.
