To Be First [Oikawa Tooru x Reader]

II. | School

Going to school with Oikawa and Iwaizumi was always fun. You remembered how once when the three of you were still in primary school you were bullied by a group of boys, but your two best friends came to rescue you, beating the bullies off with sticks. They acted as your bodyguards, and no one dared to mess with you, all in fear of the wrath of Iwaizumi and Oikawa that would be inflicted upon them. Though, things were a little bit different in high school.

Because of Oikawa's popularity, especially when it came to females, you received a lot of hate from his fangirls just for being with him all the time. There was a time when you were bullied by a crazy group of his fangirls in the beginning of your second year at Aoba Jousai. When Oikawa found out, he told you he'd 'take care of it', and now no girl is foolish enough to try and bully you. Oikawa never did tell you what he did to make them stop. 

"It's a secret, but they definitely won't try that again~!" He told you, sticking his tongue out and winking. 

Even though you never got it out of him, you were still grateful to whatever it was that put an end to their attempted sabotage on your life.

"(L/N)-san, can you please tell us what Oikawa-kun's favorite type of sweet is?" "(L/N)-chan~! Please tell us about Tooru!" "(L/N)-san, what does Oikawa like to do on the weekends?"

Day after day, you were bombarded with questions from Oikawa's fangirls asking about him. It was all Oikawa, Oikawa, Oikawa, and frankly, you were tired of it. You sighed and went back to looking through the papers attached to the clipboard you were holding. "Just ask him yourself." 

"But (L/N)-san," They whined. "You're the one girl who's close to him! You should know!"

You slammed the clipboard on a spot on the bleachers next to where you were sitting, scaring the other girls. "I told you to ask him yourself." You said, still not looking at them. You watched as their feet scurried away, carrying them away because they knew not to mess with an angry (Y/N). You rested your elbows on your thighs and brought your hands up to rub your temples. Man, those girls are annoying.

"Scaring more of Assikawa's fangirls, now are we?"

You looked up to see Iwaizumi walking up to you, volleyball in hand. "Yeah, sorry Iwa-kun. But I can't stand their endless questions all about Oikawa-kun." You rubbed your forehead and clicked your tongue. "They're giving me headaches."

"No no, you're doing us all a favor by scaring away the fangirls. If you want, I can give Oikawa a headache too with this volleyball." Iwaizumi offered, spinning the ball in his hands and smiling darkly.

Oikawa was standing at the entrance of the gym flirting it up with the girls per usual. As if sensing his impending doom, he looked over his shoulder to see Iwaizumi getting ready to spike the ball at the brunette's head. His eyes widening in surprise, he quickly said goodbye to the girls and rushed to get back to the court before the ball left the ace's grip. 

"And that's how you get Oikawa back to practice." The blackette said, making you laugh. 

"Thanks, Iwa-kun."

Practice ended, so you waited on a bench outside while Iwaizumi and Oikawa got changed. Taking out your phone and earbuds to listen to music, you stared off in the distance, getting distracted while watching a bird picking on another bird in a tree. Because of this, you didn't hear someone calling your name and trying to get your attention. Seeing a hand wave in front of your face, you paused your music, took your earbuds out of your ears, and looked up to see a tall, pale boy with short, black bangs covering his forehead. "Sorry, about that, er..." You paused, putting a finger to your mouth. The boy looked familiar, but you couldn't remember his name. "You are?"

The boy laughed and pretended to be offended. "You should at least remember the names of your classmates, (L/N)-san," He said, with a teasing tone to his voice. "My name is Kagami Rei. I'm in your class."

"Oh! Sorry about that Kagami-san, I'm bad at remembering names," You apologized. "Did you need something?"

"Yeah, actually I wanted to ask you something now that you're not with Oikawa-san or Iwaizumi-san," he said, bringing a hand up to rub the back of his neck nervously, a light hint of pink appearing on his cheeks. "Would you think about going out on a date with me to that new cafe that opened up maybe this weekend?"

You were surprised by this because it was your first time someone ever asked you on a date. Since you were always with your two best friends, they always assumed you were dating one of them. "O-oh, yeah sure!" Your acceptance of his invitation made him light up with a smile, making you blush.

"Really? Thank you so much! Here's my number by the way so we can talk more," He exchanged phone numbers with you and then prepared to head off just as Iwaizumi and Oikawa were about to meet you. "I'll see you later then!" He turned around to wave at you before he left your sight and you waved back.

"Who was that, (Y/N)-chan?" Oikawa asked, coming over to you and putting an arm around your shoulders. "Date~?" He grinned in his teasing manner. 

"Actually, yeah," You replied, surprising both boys as Oikawa took his arm off of you, his grin fading from his face. "He's Kagami Rei-san from my class. He invited me to go out with him this weekend."

"R-Really now? Well  congratulations, (Y/N)-chan!" Oikawa said, his smile returning, although not as big as his usual one, as he patted you on the head. 

"Nice one, (Y/N)." Iwaizumi congratulated you giving you a smile too. 

"Thanks guys!" You said, hugging them both by the waist. "Shall we go then?" You took the boys' arms, obviously in a happy mood after being asked out for the first time. Pulling the boys along, you made your ways home. You chattered on about how you were excited for your date, and noticed that Oikawa was strangely less talkative this time. He stayed quiet when you were talking about Kagami, which was weird, but you shrugged it off for now.

Coming into your room brushing your freshly showered hair, you went and sat on your bed humming to yourself. Your phone went off, and you saw that it was Kagami. 

From: Kagami-kun
Subject: What's up?
Hey, (L/N)-san, how are you this fine night?

You laughed and sent a text back.

To: Kagami-kun
Subject: Nothing much
Heya! Pretty good, what about you?

You immediately got a reply from him, surprising you. The two of you kept texting each other back and forth until it was midnight and you were tired. 

To: Kagami-kun
Subject: Tired > <
I think I'm going to sleep now, sorry! I'm just really tired from today still

From: Kagami-kun
Subject: Good night
Ah, okay! It's good for you to get your beauty sleep. Good night, (Y/N)-san, talk to you tomorrow!

You blushed at your phone screen and smiled.

To: Kagami-kun
Subject: Nighty night
Good night, Kagami-kun :)

Plugging your phone into its charger, you put it on the nightstand next to you. You thought about Kagami again and smiled to yourself as you went to sleep. You couldn't wait for the weekend.

Ey new character (Kagami Rei) but made out of the figment of my imagination. With summer drawing to a close soon, I'm trying to get a bunch of updates in this week. Trying. ;-; When school starts up again, I won't be able to update as frequently as I'd like, but I'll try to do them on the weekends. Let's hope I can survive :'D
