"Em, there's a letter here for you!!"

Margaret Warren called up to her niece as she rummaged through the mountain of envelopes on the kitchen table. It was the beginning of August, and Emily's 11th birthday was today. Margaret smiled to herself as she examined the letter addressed to her niece. She had waited for this moment, this day. She would miss her niece very much.

Emily came bounding down the stairs several steps at a time; she loved getting mail.

Emily paused at the bottom step. What if it was from her family? She hadn't heard from them in years. Maybe it was from her brother. Emily had forgotten what he looked like. Her family lived so far away that it took hours to get to Aunt Margaret and Uncle George's house. It was a 5 hour drive and her aunt and uncle didn't have a car. She knew her parents were busy as well, because they only called once every few months. She'd heard her brother speak once, a few months ago, over the phone. Not directly to her, though. Just background conversation. She was dying to see her family.

Aunt Margaret's face peered around the corner and the familiar face smiled warmly towards her. "Emily, dear, come and read your letter."

Emily slowly walked into the kitchen and gaped at the huge bunch of letters as packages on the table. One letter stood out to her though, and she grabbed it from underneath the pile.

The envelope was white, with a big red stamp in the middle. It was dripping, and there was something written on it, but she couldn't make it out because the ink was smudged. She flipped the envelope to the front and it was indeed for her.

Emily couldn't suppress a smile as she slowly opened the envelope. Okay, maybe she didn't slowly open it. She tore it open. Aunt Margaret watched her with a gigantic grin on her face, and it grew bigger when she noticed the look of excitement on the girls face when she finally got it open and read the letter.

"Hogwarts.... School of Witchcraft and Wizardry? Like.... Magic?"

Emily knew her parents were wizards, but she had very few memories of seeing them perform magic in front of her. She figured we wouldn't be a witch, because she knew nothing about magic, after many years of growing up with Muggles. She read the letter over again several times. She was going to a school. Of magic. A hopeful thought came to her mind. What if her brother goes there?

"I remember when your mother got her letter. Of course, I was jealous of her, but she sent me postcards and letters from there, and I have to say that it looked like a lot of fun." Aunt Margaret took the letter from her niece and read it. "Exactly like your mother's. Well, we should head out tonight to get all your school things so we don't forget."

Emily raise her eyebrows at the list of school supplies. A cauldron? Potions for beginners? A quill and parchment? At her muggle school, she required pencils, paper, notebooks and other things like that. She'd never written an essay with a piece of parchment and ink and a quill. Emily's eyes scrolled down the list. It wasn't very long, but it was hard to take in.

All students require a wand for most school subjects.

Emily's eyes practically popped out of their sockets. A wand? She closed her eyes and saw memories of her father and mother waving around their wands, using them to clean, cook, and play with Emily. There was another little figure, a little taller than Emily in those memories, but Emily couldn't put a face on him. It must've been her brother. She snapped her eyes open and looked up to see Aunt Margaret at the counter, humming and making supper.

"Em, honey, why don't you tell George about your letter?"

Emily rushed upstairs again to tell her uncle, which resulted in her uncle shouting in happiness and asking many questions, all of which Emily couldn't answer. Her uncle read the letter more than once, every time making a comment about magic wands. He only stopped talking and beaming with pride when Aunt Margaret called them down for supper.
