The piano bench creaked beneath Jinu's weight, like it hadn't been used in forever. He ran his fingers along the keys, soft and unsure, as if they might bite him. Rumi stood behind him, mic in hand, unsure if she even remembered how to sing anymore.
They hadn't planned anything. No sheet music. No lyrics. No choreography. Just them.
Just this.
Jinu played a simple chord. It echoed through the empty hall like a question. Rumi closed her eyes and let the vibration settle in her chest. It was fragile, imperfect... but alive.
She took a breath.
"I used to be so loud," she said, almost to herself. "Like if I stopped singing, I'd disappear."
Jinu didn't look up. He played another chord—different this time. A little sadder. A little warmer.
"You were always louder when you were scared," he replied.
Rumi blinked. "Is that why you never were?"
"I was scared too," he said, and this time he met her eyes. "Just better at hiding it."
The music stopped. His hands stilled.
"I haven't played since the night I left," he added. "I didn't know if I could anymore."
"You just did," she whispered.
"I didn't do it alone."
She sat beside him on the bench, knees brushing, and took a deep breath. She sang—not loudly, not perfectly—but honestly. It was just a single verse. A line from a song they never finished. One she thought she'd forgotten.
He joined her halfway through.
Two broken voices finding harmony.
When the final note faded, they sat in silence.
Then Rumi laughed. Just a small sound. Almost embarrassed.
"That was terrible," she said.
Jinu smiled. "Yeah. It was."
"But it felt good."
"It did."
They didn't need to say more.
In that moment, something cracked open between them—not a confession, not yet—but a door.
And for the first time since the battle, they stepped through it.
Together.
