The Rez was quieter than usual.
The setting sun dipped low behind the tree line, bathing the houses in warm amber light. Pip pulled into Sam and Emily's driveway, the tires crunching over the gravel. She turned off the ignition and let the silence settle for a moment.
Then she glanced at the CandyLand box in the passenger seat and snorted. "Let's hope no one flips the board this time."
She stepped out and climbed the porch, giving a quick knock before letting herself in—something she'd long since been given permission to do. The familiar scent of Emily's cooking greeted her, cozy and grounding.
Inside, the vibe was calm but slightly chaotic in the way that only boys and board games could manage.
Seth was sitting cross-legged on the floor, arguing with Embry over something on the TV. Quil had fallen half-asleep in the armchair, his head tilted back like a cartoon character mid-snore. And Jared—well, Jared was on the couch, textbook open on his lap and a highlighter in his mouth like he might actually be studying, but the page hadn't turned in at least twenty minutes.
"Hey, look who it is!" Emily called from the kitchen with a warm smile. "Dinner's in about an hour—come in, Pip."
Pip gave her a grateful nod, toed off her shoes, and marched toward the couch like a girl on a mission. She flopped down beside Jared with a dramatic groan, startling him enough that his highlighter fell out of his mouth and onto his book.
"Woah, okay," Jared said, catching it mid-bounce. "Are you here to commit a crime or just ruin my GPA?"
"Both, probably," Pip muttered, hugging a throw pillow to her chest. "Bella's back."
Jared raised an eyebrow. "Your sister Bella? As in, 'I ran to Italy to save my vampire boyfriend who left me in the woods' Bella?"
"Yep." Pip popped the P with force. "Just waltzed back onto our porch like nothing happened. Like I didn't die saving her and then she went off to chase Cullen across continents."
Jared winced, half-impressed, half-sympathetic. "Oof. That's a bold move."
Pip scoffed. "She said we need to talk." She made air quotes with a sour expression. "I said I needed to change clothes, because I wanted to see Paul. Then Edward tried to butt in—he called me Pip."
"Wait, he used your nickname?" Jared asked, eyes going wide. "Dude's lucky he's undead already."
Pip barked out a laugh, the first real one of the evening. "Right? I almost—" She cut herself off, lips twitching. "Anyway. I left before I said or did something worse."
"You did say something though, didn't you?"
She gave him a tight smile. "Oh, Jared. You know me so well."
"Tragic, really." He leaned back, slinging his arm over the back of the couch. "So, what now? You're just gonna live here on our couch until someone invents time travel and kills Edward Cullen from the timeline?"
