She was listening to Champa drone on about some minor grievance, likely food-related, responding occasionally with a mild tilt of her head or a soft-spoken correction. Everything about her radiated familiarity. And distance.
Then came the shift in air. The subtle ripple of divine space. The unmistakable arrival of someone who had once been part of her every day, now foreign by time alone.
Whis appeared beside Beerus, his form settling into the space with that same elegance he'd always carried. As was proper, he maintained a respectful pace half a step behind his God of Destruction, his gaze forward but already drawn subtly to her presence.
She turned.
Their eyes met.
Nothing in her expression changed. But everything in him did.
She hadn't changed. Not even slightly. The same silver hair, the same calm eyes that always seemed to know more than she let on. Her presence washed over him in a wave he wasn't prepared for. It was like touching a memory that still breathed.
"Whis," she said simply, as if a thousand years hadn't passed. "I wasn't expecting you."
"Neither was I," he answered, his voice as light as ever, though his pulse betrayed him. "It's something of a surprise visit."
"A surprise? From you?"
Before the tension could rise any further, the gods intervened.
"Where's Champa?! I demand a rematch!" Beerus barked, stomping forward with puffed-up rage.
Champa emerged from a side chamber, holding a half-eaten meat bun. "Rematch for what? Your incompetence? I already beat you—in your dreams, apparently."
"You humiliated me subconsciously! That counts!"
"You count as barely functional."
And like that, chaos returned.
Whis and Vados exchanged a glance.
"Shall we intervene, sister?" he asked with mild politeness.
"They haven't destroyed anything vital yet," Vados replied, tone crisp and measured. "Let them expend some energy."
Whis observed the situation calmly. It was his role, after all, to remain composed—an attendant, an observer. But as his eyes settled again on Vados, he found his thoughts drifting.
The quiet elegance of her movements, the way her eyes always seemed a breath ahead of her words, the composure he had once trained beside—he had missed it more than he wanted to admit.
And she felt it too, though she hid it just as well. There was the briefest shift in her posture, something imperceptible to the untrained eye, but to Whis, it rang louder than any insult Beerus could throw.
The air between them was dense with the weight of unsaid things. Yet, both stood calm, poised, angelic.
Beerus launched a dumpling at Champa.
Champa responded by hurling an ornate chair.
The chair missed. The dumpling did not.
"Lord Beerus, please," Whis said in a gentle but firm tone. "Might I remind you this is not a battlefield."
"He started it!" Beerus snarled.
Champa huffed. "You're still sore about a dream!"
Vados raised her staff ever so slightly, divine energy coiling at its tip. "Enough."
The word was soft, but it stopped the bickering cold.
Whis inclined his head toward her, appreciating her efficiency, even if he wouldn't voice it aloud. "Your methods remain... effective."
"Efficiency is required when managing him," she replied, tone neutral but not unkind.
Whis stepped closer to her side—respectfully, as equals in station.
"You've kept Universe 6 quite intact," he observed.
"Barely," she replied, eyes still on Champa. "My Lord undoes most of my efforts the moment I turn away."
A soft smile touched Whis's lips. "A familiar challenge."
And then she turned her gaze to him again. This time, softer.
"It is good to see you again."
Just four words. Spoken simply. But they landed like thunder.
He hesitated only a breath. "Likewise."
The gods resumed bickering behind them. The realm itself seemed to shake from their nonsense.
But in that quiet space between two ageless attendants, something stilled.
Something familiar.
Something just beginning to stir again.
