Confession

The humid air of late spring clung to Ethan like a second skin, each breath a struggle against the rising tide of anxiety. The school clock tower struck three, its chimes echoing a final, merciless countdown. Classes were dismissed, and the courtyard of Hinode High buzzed with the usual afternoon exodus—students laughing, gossiping, and making plans. But for Ethan, this was no ordinary afternoon. This was D-Day. Confession Day.

His gaze was fixed on her. Sakura Tanaka. His childhood best friend, his confidante, the sun around which his entire awkward universe revolved. She stood by the cherry blossom tree, its petals now a fading memory, bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun, her laughter like wind chimes carried on the breeze. Popular, beautiful, effortlessly radiant – everything Ethan felt he wasn't.

He clutched the crumpled letter in his sweaty palm, the words painstakingly written and rewritten, now blurring into an indecipherable mess. He'd rehearsed this a thousand times in his head: the heartfelt declaration, her surprised but gentle smile, perhaps a blush, and then... a new beginning. A beginning where the gap between the chubby, glasses-wearing, perpetually overlooked Ethan and the sparkling Sakura would finally close.

"Hey, Sakura!" His voice, when it finally emerged, was a pathetic squeak, barely audible above the din. Yet, she heard it. Her head tilted, those bright eyes, usually so warm and familiar, now held a hint of curiosity, perhaps even annoyance.

"Ethan? What's up?" she asked, her smile faltering ever so slightly as she noticed the tremor in his hands, the flush on his cheeks. Her friends, a gaggle of girls who seemed sculpted from sunlight and confidence, giggled behind their hands, their eyes raking over his disheveled uniform, his round face, his overall... lack of finesse.

Taking a deep, shaky breath that did little to calm his hammering heart, Ethan stepped forward. "Sakura," he began, his voice cracking, "I... I have something really important to tell you. I... I really like you. More than a friend. I... I love you!"

The words tumbled out in a clumsy rush, punctuated by the nervous tightening of his gut. A beat of silence stretched, an eternity under the cruel, judging gaze of Sakura's friends and the curious stares of passing students. Then, it broke.

Sakura's expression shifted, from surprise to something akin to pity, then quickly to a subtle, almost imperceptible curl of her lip. A ripple of suppressed laughter began among her friends, growing louder, bolder.

"Ethan," Sakura said, her voice softer than he expected, but the words were daggers. "You're... sweet. But really, you're not my type. I mean, look at you." She gestured vaguely at him, a subtle dismissal that stung more than any shout. "You're just... too ugly. And you know, a bit fat. I'm sorry."

The suppressed giggles erupted into full-blown peals of laughter. Her friends pointed, openly mocking him. A few boys from the basketball team, loitering nearby, joined in, their boisterous guffaws echoing the humiliation.

Ethan felt his face burn, tears prickling at the corners of his eyes. The world seemed to spin, the laughter echoing, magnifying, until it was all he could hear. His chest tightened, a crushing weight of despair. Ugly. Fat. The words carved themselves into his soul. He wanted to disappear, to vanish into thin air.

And then, it happened.

A blinding flash of light, visible only to him, erupted before his eyes. It coalesced into a translucent, shimmering blue panel, hovering impossibly in the air, framed by elegant, glowing lines. Text, sharp and crisp, appeared on its surface.

[First Quest Completed!] [Confess and Get rejected!] [System Requirements completed, system acquired!]

Ethan blinked, his mind reeling. Was he dreaming? Was the humiliation so profound that his brain was breaking?

More text scrolled, filling the screen with an almost predatory efficiency.

[Quest Reward: SSS-Rank Talent of Piano]

[Next Quest: Wait until summer for further information of this quest!]

[Daily Quest System acquired!] [Each complete daily quest will be random reward! It will be either money, talent, or assets!] [You must do this every day until the daily quest will not work anymore!]

[Daily Quest List:] [100 Push-ups] [10Km jog] [100 Sit-ups] [100 Pull-ups]

The laughter around him faded into a dull roar, replaced by the frantic beat of his own heart. A system? Like in a game? Was this some kind of sick joke? A hallucination brought on by the trauma?

Without another thought, fueled by a potent cocktail of despair, confusion, and a burgeoning, absurd hope, Ethan turned and bolted. He ran past the jeering students, past the dismissive Sakura, past the gate, his mind a whirlwind of confusion and disbelief. The blue holographic screen, however, remained fixed before his eyes, moving with him, the text unwavering.

He didn't stop until he burst through the door of his small, familiar home, gasping for breath. His mother, wiping down the kitchen counter, looked up, a concerned frown creasing her brow.

"Ethan? What's wrong? You look like you've seen a ghost!" she exclaimed.

He pointed a trembling finger at the shimmering blue panel that floated between them, its quest list still starkly visible. "Mom! Do you... do you see this? This... thing?"

His mother followed his gaze, her eyes scanning the empty space where the panel hung. She blinked, then frowned again. "See what, honey? You're pointing at nothing. Are you feeling alright? You're sweating buckets."

Ethan's arm slowly dropped. Nothing. She saw nothing. The system was just for him.

He stared at the glowing blue interface, then back at his oblivious mother. The laughter of his classmates, Sakura's cruel words, and the impossible reality of the system clashed in his mind. He wasn't hallucinating. This was real. And suddenly, the despair that had threatened to drown him began to recede, replaced by a terrifying, exhilarating, and utterly bewildering thought: his life was about to change.
