The city sparkled with New Year's lights.
Every building in the downtown district seemed wrapped in gold and silver. Strings of glowing lanterns hung above the streets, swaying gently in the cool night breeze. Shops remained open long past their usual hours, their windows decorated with glittering displays and colorful banners welcoming the new year.
Music echoed through the crowded square. Families gathered together with children sitting on their parents' shoulders. Couples held hands while taking pictures beneath enormous illuminated decorations. Street vendors sold sweet snacks, warm drinks, and glowing sticks that painted streaks of color whenever they moved through the air.
In the middle of all the excitement stood two boys. Kamol and Kim. Both were fourteen years old. Both were smiling.
And both believed this would be the happiest New Year's Eve they had ever experienced.
Kim looked around excitedly, his dark eyes shining with wonder.
"This is amazing," he said.
Kamol laughed.
"You've said that at least twenty times tonight."
"Because it is amazing."
Kim pointed toward a giant digital clock mounted above the stage in the center of the square.
The countdown would begin soon.
Thousands of people had gathered to watch it. For a moment, Kim simply stood there taking everything in. The bright lights.
The music. The smell of food drifting through the air. The excitement that seemed to spread through every person around them.
It felt magical.
Like the whole city had come alive.
Kamol nudged him.
"What are you thinking about?"
Kim smiled.
"That next year is going to be even better."
Kamol raised an eyebrow.
"You can see the future now?"
"Maybe."
Kim grinned mischievously.
"Then tell me what happens."
Kim pretended to think deeply.
"You become taller."
"I doubt it."
"You get better grades."
"Impossible."
Kim laughed.
"And we're still best friends."
Kamol looked at him. For a second, his expression softened.
"Yeah."
Neither of them knew how important those words would become.
A loud voice echoed through the speakers.
"Everyone, are you ready?"
The crowd erupted with cheers.
People raised their glowing sticks.
Others lifted their phones to record the moment. The giant clock displayed the final minute before midnight.
Kim suddenly reached for Kamol's hand. Kamol looked down.
"What?"
Kim shrugged.
"The crowd is huge."
"You scared?"
"No."
"Then why?"
Kim smiled.
"So you don't get lost."
Kamol rolled his eyes dramatically.
"As if I'd get lost."
"Sure."
Kim tightened his grip anyway. Kamol didn't pull away. The two boys stood shoulder to shoulder as excitement built around them. The final ten seconds appeared on the giant screen.
The entire square began counting together.
"Ten!"
The sound shook the air. Thousands of voices becoming one. Kim grinned and squeezed Kamol's hand.
"Nine!"
The crowd jumped and cheered. Bright lights flashed across the stage.
"Eight!"
Fireworks waited silently above the rooftops.
"Seven!"
People laughed and shouted.
"Six!"
A little girl nearby sat on her father's shoulders, waving a glowing star.
"Five!"
The energy became electric.
"Four!"
Kamol glanced at Kim. Kim was smiling so widely his cheeks hurt.
"Three!"
The city seemed to hold its breath.
"Two!"
The crowd pressed closer together.
"One!"
Then everything changed. A scream cut through the celebration. Sharp. Terrified. Unexpected. For a split second nobody understood what had happened. Then another scream followed. And another. People turned toward the far end of the square.
Something was wrong. Very wrong. Fear spread faster than fire. Someone started running. Others followed. The crowd's excitement instantly transformed into panic.
"Move!"
"Run!"
"What happened?"
The shouting grew louder. People pushed forward desperately. Nobody knew what they were running from. They only knew everyone else was running too. The wave of fear spread through thousands of people.
Kim's smile disappeared.
"Kamol?"
Kamol immediately stepped closer.
"It's okay."
But even as he spoke, someone crashed into him from behind. Hard.
Kamol stumbled. His grip loosened.
"Kim!"
Another person shoved between them.
Then another. The crowd surged like a powerful ocean current. Unstoppable. Terrifying. Kamol grabbed for Kim's hand. Their fingers touched. For a brief second. Then slipped apart.
"No!"
Kim reached forward desperately.
"Kamol!"
Their eyes met across the moving crowd. Fear flashed across Kim's face. Real fear.
The kind neither of them had ever seen in the other before. Kamol fought against the rushing people.
"Kim!"
Someone slammed into his shoulder. Pain shot through his arm. He nearly fell.
When he looked up again, more people had pushed between them.
"Kamol!" Kim's voice sounded distant now. The crowd carried him backward.
He tried to force his way forward.
But he was only fourteen.
The sea of frightened adults was too strong. For one terrible moment, they could still see each other. Just barely. Kim's hand stretched toward him. Kamol reached back.
Neither could get close enough.
Then a group of running people passed between them. And Kim disappeared.
Gone. The fireworks exploded overhead.
Brilliant colors filled the sky. Red. Gold. Blue. Silver.
The New Year had arrived. The crowd should have been celebrating. Instead, panic ruled the square. Kamol pushed through the chaos, ignoring the fireworks. Ignoring the lights. ignoring everything.
"Kim!" His voice cracked. No answer. Only screams. Only noise. Only strangers. Meanwhile, Kim searched desperately through the crowd. His heart pounded against his ribs.
"Kamol!"
People shoved past him from every direction. He couldn't see. Couldn't think. Couldn't find the one face he was looking for. The fireworks continued bursting overhead, beautiful and bright. But neither boy noticed. Both were desperately searching through the sea of strangers.
Calling each other's names. Hoping to hear a familiar voice. Praying to see a familiar face.
"Kim!"
"Kamol!"
The noise swallowed their cries.
The city celebrated the beginning of a new year.
Yet for two frightened thirteen-year-old boys, it felt like the end of everything.
And for the first time since they had met, they were completely alone.
