Denki sat on the back steps of the campus green house, hood up, knees drawn to his chest, static flickering silently across his fingertips."
He hadn't slept. Or eaten much. Every voice in his head twisted the silence around him.
What if they're right?
What if there's a part of you that you don't remember?
What if you did something you can't undo?
What if she starts to believe it, too?
He stared at his hands. They don't feel like his anymore.
Then he heard footsteps.
Soft, steady, and familiar.
He didn't look up until he felt her sit beside him.
Jirou didn't say anything at first. Just sat there, close enough to feel the warmth of her knee against his.
Finally, she pulled one ear jack from her hoodie and slipped it gently into his hand.
No words. Just music.
It started quiet. Then finally it was her voice.
A new track.
"You said you'd stay through every storm...so I'll be loud when you go quiet."
Denki breathed hitched.
He didn't realize he was crying until she reached over and brushed his cheek gently with her thumb. "You're not alone. Not now. Not ever."
He finally looked at her. Really looked at her.
"Do you think...I could be the spy and just not know it?"
She didn't flinch. "No."
"But-"
"I don't trust what people say. I trust what I know. And I know you."
Denki shoulders trembled. But for the first time in days, the static stopped sparkling. They sat there until the sun dip below the trees. Her hand never left his.
