When I Was Pure

Purity is a gimmick

Like the seductive look of a rose

It leaves you lacking

Like the enticing sound of music

It leaves you hurting

As if you were dancing to the rain

It leaves you empty

Like the sweet juice of a honeysuckle

It confuses you

Like the wings of a bird

It breaks you

Just like the succulent whisper of a breeze

And it warms you

Like the opposing sound of a busy city

And it lies to you

Like love lies to a sinner

And it punishes you

like a mother her child

And it pulls you down

into the pits of your thoughts

And it leaves you hanging

Off the branches of life itself
