Little Sonic huffs in frustration.
"mama, I can't do it!"
He grumbles angrily. He had been flapping his wings tirelessly for an hour now, and he still can't control the direction in which he floats. The galaxy sparkles above him, matching the design of his wings.
His mother looks down at him, giving a lighthearted sigh.
"Patience, my child. It's not much about how hard you strain your wings, but about the direction and timing."
She advises. Being the impatient child he is, Sonic grunts and flaps his wings harder. His mother chuckles, finding his determination adorable.
"Oh, Sonic... One day, you will have to learn to wait."
He stomps his foot and his wings fall, out of energy.
"Mama, can you please take me to the forest? There's a big high up rock there I can practice with, I'll surely learn-"
"Sonic, how do you know that? Did you go into the forest?"
Her eyes narrow. She's told Sonic countless times, don't go into the forest. There's dangerous creatures that lurk inside, and even come out of the forest on occasion.
Sonic's eyes widen, realizing he's let his secret slip.
"N-no! I mean, yes..."
He rubs his neck with guilt.
"But I can really feel the difference in there! It's so much easier when I can push off a rock, being high up in the air.. please, if we're super careful, can you take me??"
He begs, staring at his mom with hopeful eyes.
She lets out a long sigh, then nods.
"If you truly believe it could help you learn, I suppose I could take you. No longer than twenty minutes."
Sonic's eyes light up with excitement.
"Yes, yes! Thank you, mama! I promise I'll fly real good, you'll see!"
She reluctantly takes his hand, and drifts slowly in the direction of the forest. The forest is a giant meteor, with galactic plants growing off it from the sheer amount of time it's existed. When they make it to the forest, she hesitates.
"Sonic... are you sure about this?"
She thinks twice, wondering if she shouldn't have said yes to him.
Sonic nods confidently.
"Yes! I am very sure. I didn't even see any monsters the last time I came here."
She shakes her head.
"Alright.."
They make their way into the forest. Sonic leads the way, showing her to the clearing with the tall rock. They make it there eventually, and he climbs up the rock effortlessly in zero gravity. His mother nervously fidgets with her hands when she sees how high the rock is.
"Careful up there, son! If you need help balancing, let me know."
"I will!"
He reassures her, his eyes sparkling with excitement. He has a trick he wants to show her that he's been practicing for a while. He peps himself up for a moment, bouncing his feet.
"Mama, look, I'm ready! Are you watching?
He gets impatient when he hears no response.
"Mama! Mom, look!"
He yells down the rock. He swallows nervously when he still hears no reply.
"Mama..? Where'd you go?"
He floats down from the rock, his feet landing on the blue grass. He looks around frantically, but doesn't see her.
"Mom? Mom?!"
His voice grows panicked. His ears perk up when he hears a yell from further into the forest. He runs in the direction of where he heard, his footsteps getting faster. He hears the chilling roar of a novabeast, and his heart stops for a moment. He rushes towards the sound and then comes to a halt.
"MAMA!!"
The beast has her in its big clawed hand. It's one pupilless eye staring at Sonic.
"Sonic, RUN!"
His mom shouts. She struggles in the beasts grasp, but to no avail.
"Put her down!!"
Sonic shrieks with tears in his eyes. He knows he can do nothing to this monster at all, but there's some hope it will let her go if he yells. The creature turns its head to look back at Sonic's mother. It roars so loud that the entire forest seems to shake. The sound meant to alert other novabeast nearby. It throws his mother to the ground, she grunts in pain when her back brutally hits the dirt.
"MOM!"
Sonic yells when it throws her. Before he can run over, the beasts hand transforms into a spike, and plunges it through her stomach.
Sonic gasps in terror, watching the scene unfold. With her last few breaths, his mother weakly speaks to him.
"Sonic.. g-go...! They're.. coming.. I..."
Before she can finish what she's saying, her voice trails off and the light leaves her eyes. Sonic stares in horror. He hears the distant trampling of more monsters on their way. The monster that killed his mom screeches and slices a cut along his chest. Sonic stumbles to the ground, gasping for air. He stays frozen for a moment before snapping out of it.
He gets up and runs as fast as he can, all the way to the edge of the forest. He hears the pounding feet behind him. Terrified, he jumps off the edge and uses his wings to propel himself away from the forest meteor. His panic setting in fueled the strength in his wings to escape. He flies past asteroids and other meteor locations, just trying to get home.
Tears form in his eyes. He stops on a small asteroid, needing to catch his breath.
He clutches his wounded chest and starts sobbing. Was it all his fault? In childish curiosity, he lead his own mother to her death. He lays down on the rock, breathing heavily, his breaths getting faster and faster. He starts sobbing and trying to stop the bleeding from his wound at the same time. He lays there for hours after, eventually drained.
He has no one back at the castle to go to. His mother was the only one he had, and now she's gone.
