The dust from the firefight still hung heavy in the air, mixing with the acrid smell of burnt circuits and broken trust.
Syyr's chest heaved, adrenaline crashing against exhaustion. Jarek's eyes scanned the dark alleyway, every shadow a possible threat.
"We can't keep doing this," Syyr said, voice low, voice raw.
"Vian's playing us."
Jarek nodded slowly, jaw tight.
"I knew that when I trusted him again."
A sudden movement caught their attention - Vian stepped out of the shadows, hands raised but smile sharp as a blade.
"You think you're smart, don't you?" Vian said, voice cold and amused.
"But you're just pawns in a game bigger than you."
Syyr's fingers twitched near his weapon, but Jarek's hand found his wrist, holding him back with an unexpected gentleness.
"Talk," Jarek demanded, voice low and steady.
Vian's smile widened, a predator circling its prey.
"I'm here with a proposal. Join me. I can give you the resources to take down Kade. But not together."
Syyr's gaze flicked to Jarek - betrayal and disbelief simmering in the space between them.
"Split us up? Never."
"It's your choice," Vian said, voice smooth as oil.
"Power... or loyalty."
The words hung heavy like a guillotine's blade.
Syyr felt Echo stir beneath his skin, whispering promises of strength, of control, of freedom from the endless fight.
Jarek's voice cut through the tension, firm and desperate:
"We're stronger together. No deal with him."
Vian laughed, low and cruel.
"Then prepare to be broken."
Behind them, the thud of heavy boots grew louder - Kade's enforcers closing in fast.
Syyr and Jarek exchanged a look - no words needed. The weight of everything unsaid pressed between them.
"Together," they said, moving as one.
Syyr's heartbeat thundered in his ears. His hand found Jarek's briefly - a silent promise amid the chaos.
The night swallowed them whole, but for once, they weren't alone.
To be continued...
