But he doesn’t.
Instead, he says, “I can’t date your teacher, Jason. That’s really inappropriate.”
Which isn’t his issue at all, but it’s a decent point nonetheless.
“Only for the next two months,” Jason informs him.
And shit.
Marvin hits the brakes too hard at the next traffic light.
He looks at Jason in shock.
“You forgot, didn’t you?” the boy asks, amused.
In Marvin’s defense, he did not forget that Jason will go to high school after this summer. He just didn’t realize what that would imply.
It’s quiet for a while. Jason knows Marvin needs some time to think.
“Okay, let’s make a deal,” Marvin finally suggests. “I’ll ask him out on Monday, but if he says no, you’ll go inside and come out by yourself from then on, so I don’t have to face him again.”
Yes, he said he wanted to change and be braver, but Marvin draws the line at having to see his first crush two times a week after getting rejected by him. No, thank you.
“Deal."
_____________________________________________
Nervously, Marvin steps into the classroom on Monday morning. Jason walks past him, putting down his backpack. Then he turns back around.
“I’m going to the bathroom,” he says, giving a thumbs up — only for Marvin to see — on his way out.
Marvin takes one last deep breath before walking closer to Whizzer, who is leaning against the desk.
“Hi,” he says.
“Hi.”
“I wanted to ask you something... uhm...” That’s about when Marvin loses all his bravery and finds himself staring at the ground, having a little déjà vu to his apology.
“You are... you’re really... awesome,” Marvin says slowly.
Whizzer, the asshole, just hums in agreement.
“Jason really likes you a lot, you know, and... and I like you too.” Marvin really wants to disappear right now. “God, this is so stupid,” he mumbles.
“Would you want to go out with me?” he asks, looking up — but anywhere that isn’t Whizzer.
There’s an unbearable silence from the man in front of him, so he starts tugging at his shirt.
He’s interrupted by Whizzer’s hand grabbing his left. “Marv,” he says, not letting go.
Marvin looks at him. Whizzer is about to burst out laughing, just barely holding it together.
Marvin’s terrified and tries to leave, but is pulled right back.
“Marvin.” Whizzer’s expression softens.
“I’d love to go out with you,” he adds, nodding.
Marvin’s mouth opens slightly in confusion. “What?”
Now Whizzer does start laughing. “You’re an idiot.”
He rolls his eyes, but his smile is so big that his cheeks hurt.
“So, what have you planned?” Whizzer asks.
“Hm?”
“For the date?”
Oh. “Uhh... I didn’t really expect you to say yes, so I didn’t really think about that,” Marvin admits, scratching the back of his head with his free hand.
“Well, usually I’d suggest a café, but we kinda did that already. How about we just go to the park?” Whizzer suggests.
“Sounds wonderful,” Marvin says, squeezing Whizzer’s hands.
“Fucking finally,” Jason says as he enters the room.
“Jason! Who taught you that word?” Marvin asks, taken aback.
“I don’t wanna burst your bubble, babe, but you say that word like every few sentences,” Whizzer says, amused.
Marvin’s cheeks heat up at the nickname, but it’s not enough to distract him from the spoken words.
“No I don’t,” he says, offended. “Fuck you.”
His eyes widen at his own words.
Whizzer puts up his left hand. “I rest my case,” he deadpans.
