Start from the beginning

"Its normal teenage stuff, tell him Coby!" Stella huffed, shuffling her seat to face the boy who just stared at her with slight judgement. Tony just let out a quiet snort at his expression.

"Sureee.." Coby dragged out and Stella quickly furrowed her brows, staring the boy down.

"You're telling me you've never gave a hickey before? Never had one?" She questioned.

"Jesus christ.." Coby breathed out, rubbing his hand against his forehead with a small groan, "Yeah, on random girls but I don't go outa my fuckin' day to be a fuckin' vampire." He explained but Stella just continued staring at him with a confused look, making Coby raise his brows.

"Huh.." She simply mumbled, still staring like Coby had just said the craziest thing on the planet.

"Wha'? Why's tha' like crazy fuckin' information for ya?" Coby huffed out.

"I've just heard shit about you at school.. you're different to what I expected." Stella shrugged and Coby just looked at her for a moment before turning away once again once he couldn't find the words to reply because her words were all wrong- he was everything that people said about him. That asshole that everyone loved for no apparent reason, well maybe the reason that he played football and was slightly attractive even if he was awful to everyone around him.

"Seriously? Peter's never gave you a hickey?"

"..fuckin' hell."

It was weird thinking about that only a couple steps away was where Ruby was buried deep underground, never to be seen by anyone ever again. Coby couldn't bring his legs to move any closer, he was just stood outside the ring of trees that circled the tiny grave, trying to force himself to even inch forward anymore. He could remember feeling the exact way when his momma had died, he couldn't give her a funeral, not a real one, but he was able to give her some what of a nice burial- but he wasn't there to watch. Coby wasn't there to grieve, to remember, to drag on the final memories of her life, he couldn't do it.

And now here he was, years later yet nothing had changed.

Because if he walked over there, it was confirmation that he had failed her and he didn't know if he could handle that right now.

For now, she had the flowers and small creatures surrounding her as company, Coby was too selfish to join her in that moment. He let out a small sigh, giving the patch of mud one last glance before turning his back on her- something he'd done her whole life. Stella gave him a small reassuring nod, going to take a step forward towards him but Coby just shook his head.

"..just go inside.." He managed to mumble out, voice small and shaky, making Stella suck in a breath before wandering away from him.

Coby didn't know what he was doing, didn't know why he told her to leave or why his soul was now reaching out for something it shouldn't, something he's just fought days to rid himself of. At least when he had that in his veins, he didn't have to think about what he was or about the things he was capable of. It provided an oasis in a land of battle, provided him a small escape from the echoing voices in his mind that wouldn't leave him.

There wasn't a light for Coby, no hope in the darkness, just simple, continuous agony.

It was weird because Coby didn't start like this so why was he going to end like this?

His head tilted to the side slightly, giving her grave another glance before wandering off in the massive field that surrounded the compound, searching for some peace to calm his suffocating mind. Coby was sure that the pain in his wrists were the only thing stopping him from finding the nearest sharp object to try and seek out darkness once again- pain kept him stable, kept him grounded and that's what he needed in that second. The compound nor anyone in it could provide peace for him but being on his own and escaping everything could.

He needed to keep moving no matter what.

If he stopped, everything would consume him at once, moving away was key.

"Yur doin' it again." Ruby's voice spoke out from beside him, he didn't look, "Just like every other time.. ya would rather run then face the shit ya have done." She dryly chuckled out but Coby just kept walking, not sparing her a single glance even if that's what she deserved because he was selfish. Or maybe it was the fact that it didn't even look like his baby anymore, his baby was so goddamn beautiful, so precious but the thing next to him wasn't. It wasn't Ruby anymore and it never would be again, she was gone, Coby was alive, stood on earth.

Ruby let out a small dry laugh at that, still continuing to just walk by his side, "Whatchya gonna do? Go get high, drunk? Ignore me?" She listed on, her voice becoming even more distorted and un-Ruby like, but Coby couldn't argue back because she was right, every thing she had mentioned was everything that was lingering in his mind. No matter how much he'd tried to push them away, they'd keep coming back, they were a permeant part of him now.

"Momma didn't die for ya to just turn out like this."

Those words stuck. Stabbed and gutted Coby.

He finally looked over to her, bracing himself for the ugly and soul twisting sight, but she was already gone, playing even more tricks in his mind.

It was a violent and brutal attack and his mind knew it, it wasn't going to stop any time soon. Ruby was right, he'd not only failed his baby but his momma too, someone he never wanted to fail ever again- one time was enough, but here he was. Stood silent in a field, staring at the spot that Ruby just was, eyes glossy as that one sentence repeated over and over again in his head. And again, he was back at the beginning, wanting to just rip open his stitches all over again.

Coby just dropped to the ground a second later, laying on his back, staring up at the sky that was slowly turning grey from the heavy clouds filling it. But he didn't move, didn't try to go into the compound as small rain drops turned into heavy down pour because the rain was loud and it silenced everything else. His clothes were drenched, arm hairs stuck up as the cold truly began hitting him but he was used to the cold so it just ended up somehow bringing him more comfort.

He only tilted his head once he felt someone laying down next to him, not saying a word. Stella just stared up the sky just like he was a second before, her make-up slowly flowing off of her face as more and more rain soaked her. Yet there was no discomfort in her face and she made no effort to move or leave. Coby tilted his head back up to the sky, small sigh- something of relief- bubbling out of him. Stella slowly moved her hand up, holding it for him to see, offering him something more to ground him.

Coby gently took it into his rough and cold hang, intertwining her tiny fingers alongside his huge ones, softly dropping them to rest on the ground below. Her thumb traced small patterns into the back of his hand, the action causing Coby to shut his eyes tight.

"I'm right here.. I'm never going to leave you, Coby."

And for some reason, Coby found himself believing her words.

And that gave him something to keep trying for.
