You wake up late.

Your room is dim. The kind of cloudy outside that feels like the sun forgot to get out of bed. It’s quiet. No birds. No hallway footsteps. Just the ticking of the old analog clock your mom refuses to replace. It fills the silence like a metronome for your breathing.

Tick.
Tick.
Tick.

You sit up slowly. Something about today feels gray.

You boot up your laptop again. There’s a weird flicker in the screen—nothing major. Just a blink, like the pixels exhaled for a second.

You ignore it.

Solus loads, and the world greets you with morning fog drifting over the riverbank. Your little shack is still there. One chicken pecks the grass outside, head bobbing like it’s nodding at your arrival.

You step outside.

The day is slow. You chop more wood, hum a little tune that doesn’t have a name. You plant wheat near the river with the three seeds you found yesterday. You kill a spider under a tree and don’t flinch this time.

Everything is fine.

Except…

...you swear you had four torches last night.

You check the chest. Three.

Hm.

Maybe you miscounted.

You go mining. You find coal, a bit of iron. Nothing fancy. The caves are shallow here. But when you leave, the sun is already setting.

Back at your shack, you place a few torches. You light up the inside and stop just as you're about to place one by the door.

There’s already one there.

But you didn’t place it.

You’re… pretty sure you didn’t.

You stare at it for a while. Then you break it and move it two blocks to the left. Just to mark it. Just to see.

That night, you log off with a weird taste in your mouth. You don’t feel scared. Not yet. But there’s a little voice in your head that won’t shut up.

What if you didn’t notice everything he changed?

You close your laptop.

Behind you, the analog clock ticks.

One second skips.

Like it hiccuped.
