Karina had just finished brushing her hair, still slightly damp from her quick post-dinner shower, when her phone lit up. She padded back to her bed, curling under the covers, cheeks still pink from the mountain air and a little flushed from overthinking.

She expected a basic reply. Maybe a "lol be careful" or a "classic beginner move."

What she didn't expect was panic.

Y/n [10:00 PM]
wait what??
are you okay?? like actually okay??
you didn't hit your head or twist something, right?

Y/n [10:02 PM]
i swear if you're texting me from a hospital bed rn i'm gonna be so pissed 😤

She blinked, warmth blooming behind her ribs.

He's worried.
Not teasing. Not brushing it off.
Actually worried.

Karina couldn't help it—her lips curled into a slow smile, heart thudding a little harder. She lay back against the headboard and typed, fingers moving more gently than usual.

Karina [10:04 PM]
woah chill 😭
i'm fine, promise.
just bruised my ego a bit. i slipped while getting off the lift in front of a group of 1st years lol

She added a photo—not of her face, but of her legs wrapped in two ridiculously fluffy blankets and a steaming mug of cocoa resting on her lap.

Karina [10:05 PM]
see? alive and cozy. no hospital gown in sight 🫶

She hit send and exhaled softly, heart doing a weird little dance as she waited.

Down the hall, she could hear her classmates talking about karaoke in the game lounge, but she stayed where she was—under the blankets, in the quiet. The only thing she wanted to do tonight was talk to him.

Because something had changed. The way he reacted, the way his concern came so fast and so real—it made everything feel less... casual. Less like flirting on an app and more like someone who saw her even through a screen.

Her phone buzzed again.

Y/n [10:07 PM]
thank god.
i was already googling "can you survive a ski injury with no signal" 😩

Y/n [10:08 PM]
and now i'm jealous. you got blankets and cocoa?
unfair.

She laughed aloud, biting her lip, cheeks warming.

Karina [10:09 PM]
well maybe if you were here, i'd share 😏
but only if you promised not to roast me for falling

She hesitated, then added one more message:

Karina [10:10 PM]
and thanks for worrying btw
i didn't expect that
but it... meant a lot.

She stared at the screen after sending it, thumb hovering over the app.

No matter how hard she'd tried to keep things light — to not fall — she was already slipping.

And not just on the snow.
