AN EVENT THAT SHAPED MY LIFE- BY TRENT NEWTON
Growing up in Hamilton, Ontario, I always found I had a special attachment to the art of cinema. Entering my third year at Humber College for the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Media Production, those assumptions at such an early age were correct. When asked to pinpoint a moment in my life that shaped me into this individual, the answer is simple.
When I was three years old, I would run around my home with a video camera, playing with my toys and setting up different camera angles to get the perfect shot, the 'magic moment' that I had seen so often in films. My favourite movie at the time was Indiana Jones, specifically Raiders of the Lost Ark. Naturally, I wanted to BE Indy, take on the roll of the character as he succeeded in saving the world and beating up the bad guys.
One night, my parents helped my make my dream come true. In our living room, we set up the film playing through our television set and I dressed up as Indiana himself. The stage was set: the Amazon rainforest, deep inside a hidden temple with a golden idol (a prop genie lamp was the stand in) ready for the taking. As I made sure my parents were getting the appropriate coverage and angle for the shots, I re-enacted the scene to a tee: every movement and facial expression Harrison Ford made during the events in the movie, I made as well. My father even chased me with a gigantic bouncy ball to bring the filming to a climactic conclusion.
Looking back at that night, I can see where the seeds of my love for film were planted. I began rounding up my friends: we have filmed short and feature length movies throughout the city for the last seven years. My passion has now taken me to Humber to pursue the degree in film, a degree that I am now two years away from achieving. Obtaining this scholarship provided by Wattpad would not only assist in making my dream come true, it would give a true purpose to that moment long ago.
