Heartbreak was supposed to be loud. Explosive. Shattering.
But for Elena Gilbert, it was quiet. Just a long stretch of silence and aching space where Stefan used to be.
The boarding house felt colder. Her room, lonelier. And her heart... heavier.
She didn't cry. Not really. Not the way she did when her parents died. This was different. This wasn't death—it was distance. It was watching someone you love become a stranger again.
And then there was Damon.
Damon, who made everything more complicated than it needed to be.
"You didn't have to try to kill my brother," she'd said, her voice shaking as she shoved him out of her house that night.
He didn't even fight it. Just stood there with that mask of pain he refused to admit was pain, his blue eyes hollow.
So, no. She wasn't running to Damon. And Stefan... he wasn't reaching back.
Which left her floating.
Until Caroline.
Caroline Forbes didn't mean to be the girl who stayed. But somehow, she was.
She was there when Elena didn't want to talk. She was there when Elena needed coffee at midnight. She was there when Elena curled into a corner of her bed and just... stayed there.
Caroline never asked for details.
She didn't need them.
She just listened to the silence, and sometimes, she filled it with stories. About Tyler. About how confusing things were. How one moment he'd kiss her like she was oxygen and the next, he'd pull away like she burned him.
"We're a mess," Caroline said one night, sprawled across Elena's bed, a blanket thrown lazily over her legs. "You and Stefan. Me and Tyler. Maybe it's Mystic Falls. This place is cursed."
Elena smiled, just a little. "If it is, we're the ones who broke the curse."
And for a second, they just looked at each other. And the silence wasn't heavy—it was soft.
Friday night. Mystic Grill. Crowded. Loud. Elena should have gone home, but Caroline insisted.
"You need air," she said, dragging her out with one arm looped through hers. "And fries."
They sat in their usual booth, but everything felt different. Maybe it was the way Caroline kept leaning closer when she talked, like Elena was the only one worth hearing. Or maybe it was the way her laugh made Elena forget what sadness felt like.
Or maybe—just maybe—Elena was starting to notice things she hadn't before.
Like the way Caroline's eyes crinkled when she smiled. Or the way her voice softened when she said Elena's name.
"Elena?" Caroline tilted her head. "You okay?"
"Yeah," she said too quickly, eyes dropping to her drink. "Just thinking."
Caroline hesitated. Then she reached out, fingers brushing against Elena's. "You don't have to think so hard all the time. You can just... be."
Elena's breath hitched. That simple touch felt like electricity.
"Thanks," she whispered.
But what she really meant was why does this feel different?
