Kuroko Tetsuya stood in front of Seirin High's gates, gripping the strap of his bag with his usual emotionless expression. The school was small compared to Teiko, lacking the grandeur he had once been accustomed to, but it was exactly what he needed—a fresh start.

His fingers briefly curled against his side as a dull ache pulsed through his lower back, a reminder of the injury he had been ignoring for far too long. It had started in middle school, during an intense training session. At first, it had been a simple strain, a moment of sharp pain that faded quickly. But over time, it worsened—stiffness, numbness, moments when his legs felt weak after a tough game. He had never told anyone. Basketball was his life, and he couldn't afford to be benched.

Exhaling softly, he stepped inside, his mind focused on one thing—basketball.

"You're Kuroko, right?"

Kuroko turned his head slightly as a tall, muscular boy with spiky red hair towered over him. Kagami Taiga.

The first thing Kuroko noticed was his presence—it was strong, almost overwhelming, the exact opposite of his own. The second thing he noticed was the way Kagami was looking at him, slightly skeptical, as if wondering whether he had the right person.

"Yes," Kuroko said flatly.

Kagami frowned. "You don't look like a basketball player."

Kuroko was used to that reaction. He was smaller than most athletes, his build unassuming, and his presence nearly nonexistent. Still, he had no intention of explaining himself. Instead, he simply said, "Let's see how you feel after the game."

Kagami raised an eyebrow but didn't push further.

First Practice at Seirin

The gym smelled of sweat and polished wood, a comforting scent that made Kuroko's fingers twitch with anticipation. As the coach, Riko Aida, introduced the newcomers, Kuroko watched the team closely. They were good—rough around the edges, but strong-willed. This was the kind of team he wanted to grow with.

Riko gave them a few warm-ups before moving into practice games. Kuroko wasn't surprised when Kagami immediately stood out, dunking over the others with terrifying ease. Raw talent, Kuroko thought. With proper teamwork, he could become unstoppable.

"Alright! Kuroko, show us what you've got!" Riko called.

Kuroko nodded and stepped onto the court. The moment the game began, he disappeared.

His Misdirection worked flawlessly—one second, he was there, the next, he was gone, passing the ball so seamlessly that his teammates barely noticed him move. The opposing side struggled, their eyes darting around in confusion as he slipped through them like a ghost.

Even Kagami, who had been watching skeptically, looked mildly impressed.

"Damn. That was... something."

Kuroko simply nodded. "I told you."

Everything was going well. But then—

A sharp flare of pain shot up Kuroko's spine as he twisted to intercept a pass. His vision blurred for a second. His legs felt weak. He stumbled, barely catching himself before anyone noticed.

Not now. Not in front of them.

He forced his body to move, ignoring the warning signs screaming at him. By the time the match ended, sweat clung to his skin, not just from exertion but from the sheer effort of keeping himself upright.

He could tell Riko was watching him closely, her sharp eyes scanning for weaknesses. He couldn't let her find any.

"You okay, Kuroko?" Kagami asked, frowning.

Kuroko nodded immediately. "I'm fine."

Lying came easily when you had practiced it for so long.

Later That Night

The dorm room was silent except for the faint sound of Kuroko's controlled breathing. He sat on the edge of his bed, pressing an ice pack against his lower back, his shirt lifted just enough to expose the bruised skin beneath.

The pain was worse than before. He had pushed himself too hard today.

As he stared down at his phone, a message appeared.

Akashi Seijuro: "You're reckless, Kuroko."

Kuroko blinked. He hadn't spoken to Akashi since Teiko. He hadn't even told him about his school choice. But of course, Akashi always knew.

Kuroko Tetsuya: "I'm fine."

A few seconds later, the response came.

Akashi Seijuro: "Lying doesn't suit you."

Kuroko stared at the screen, his grip tightening around the phone. He didn't reply.

Instead, he leaned back against the pillow, staring at the ceiling. His body ached, his mind was exhausted, and for the first time in a long while, he felt something dangerous stirring in his chest.

Doubt.

Would he really be able to keep this a secret?
