Dan's POV

"But I'm not broken, Mum!" Dan cried, "I'm not confused, not damaged, I dont need this!"

Dan's mum glared at him through the rearview mirror. "Daniel James Howell. This camp is going to help you. You're obviously going through something right now that is causing you to have... certain... um... feelings and this place will help you sort yourself out." She said firmly.

Dan scowled back at her, but of course she couldn't see it with her eyes fixed on the road and Dan forced to sit in the backseat like a child. A sixteen year old child.

"I'm doing this for your own good, remember." She added.

No. You're doing this for your own good. Dan thought of saying, but bit his tongue.

The rest of the car ride was spent in tense silence. Dan watched the world zoom by outside of his window, half wanting to just open the door and let himself fall out onto the pavement. To him, and probably every other LGBTQ kid, major roadrash sounded much more appealing than a Catholic correction camp.

But who knows? Maybe he'd find a nice boyfriend there? HA! Like that would ever happen!

No less than twenty minutes later, (or maybe it was twenty hours... Dan couldn't tell) their car pulled up on a dirt road in front of what looked like nothing more than a huge cluster of different sized wooden buildings. Lush, redwood, trees were everywhere, casting long, dark shadows in the afternoon sun.

"This looks like a regular summer camp." Dan pointed out, heaving himself out of the car.

"Exactly," His mum nodded, opening the trunk and getting his suitcase. "See? This'll be fun. Just you wait. You'll spend about three months here and when you come back you'll be perfectly normal."

Dan sighed and muttered some choice words under his breath, but followed his mother into what looked like the "Main Office" cabin.

"Daniel Howell is here to sign in." Mum told a smiling lady at the front desk.

"Great! Daniel, we have you staying in Cabin Nine, for the time being. You can say your goodbye's to your mother and head off. The resident cabins are the smaller ones off to the right, you're sure to find them, quite hard to miss." She said cheerily.

"G'bye mum," Dan grumbled, taking his bag from her and walking swiftly toward the door.

"I love you, Danny!" She called after him.

As Dan was leaving, he overheard his mum ask the lady if she thought this place could "cure" her son.

"Oh don't worry," The woman said. Was she holding back laughter? Dan could definately hear it in her voice.

Well that's not weird at all. (Note the sarcasm.)

Nevertheless, Dan left the room without looking back and trudged down the dusty dirt path, dragging his wheeled suitcase behind him. He found Cabin Nine quickly, just as the lady had promised, and knocked on the door. His stomach was twisted into knots, making him nervous and a bit queasy. He felt sick, but erged himself not to show it when a tall man, who looked like he might be in his early twenties, opened the door.

"Hello!" He beamed. "Are you PJ, Charlie, or Daniel?" He asked, looking over a rollsheet.

"Danie-- Just Dan, thanks." He told him.

"Well, hi Dan!" He grinned widely, crossing Dan's name off. "I'm Randy! I'm going to be your camp counselor for the next three months! I'll be staying inside your cabin to keep an eye on you boys. You know, to make sure you don't do anything... unholy," He said cheekily, winking.
This confused Dan. Weren't the people here supposed to be total homophobes? But this guy seemed to be slyly encouraging him to like boys.... Strange.... He didn't have much time to over think it, though, before Randy started talking again, "You're the first one here so you get first pick at beds! Cool, right?"
