The world had changed, but some things never would.

High above the city, the skyline stretched in golden hues as the sun dipped toward the horizon. New York was as loud and restless as ever, but for Steve Rogers, it was a constant reminder of time slipping through his fingers. He had fought wars, lost friends, and watched the world reshape itself into something both familiar and foreign. Yet, despite it all, he remained—a soldier, a leader, and, at times, a man out of time.

Standing on the rooftop of Avengers Tower, Steve let out a slow breath, adjusting the grip on his shield. Training had just ended, but his mind was elsewhere. Recent threats had kept him on edge, but it wasn't just the battle against enemies that weighed on him. It was the battle within himself.

"Lost in thought again, Cap?"

Sam Wilson's voice pulled him back to the present. The Falcon landed gracefully beside him, wings retracting as he studied Steve with a knowing smirk.

Steve sighed, offering a small chuckle. "Something like that."

Sam folded his arms. "You know, for a guy who saved the world more times than I can count, you sure spend a lot of time brooding."

Steve shook his head. "Just thinking about what's next. We've got intel on a new player in town—someone with powers unlike anything we've seen before."

Sam raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah? What's the story?"

"That's the thing," Steve said, looking out over the city. "We don't know. Just whispers. Some say she can fly. Others say she can make people do whatever she wants with just a thought. Either way, Fury wants us to find her before someone else does."

Sam let out a low whistle. "Sounds like trouble."

Steve nodded. "Or an ally."

Before Sam could respond, a sharp beeping came through his earpiece. Steve tapped his own communicator, his expression immediately sharpening.

"Cap, we got something," Natasha Romanoff's voice came through, steady and urgent. "Unidentified hostile activity downtown. You might want to see this for yourself."

Steve exchanged a glance with Sam before snapping his shield onto his back.

"Let's move."

Within moments, they were in the air—Sam soaring ahead, while Steve took a Quinjet to the location. As they approached, smoke billowed from the streets below. Civilians ran in every direction, and in the center of the chaos stood a lone figure.

A woman.

She floated a few feet above the ground, her dark hair caught in the wind. A strange energy crackled around her fingertips, and as Steve watched, a group of armed mercenaries turned on each other, dropping their weapons in confusion as if they had lost control of their own bodies.

Steve narrowed his eyes. This must be her.

But was she friend or foe?

As he jumped from the Quinjet and landed with practiced ease, her eyes locked onto his.

For the first time in a long time, Steve Rogers felt something unexpected.

Anticipation.
