So, we were in Crete. Not that it mattered, I didn't know anything about Crete. The soldiers cut the ropes holding our hands together, and I rubbed my wrists, which were red and burned. I didn't trust him, but this meal could be my last, and I hadn't eaten in days. The food looked so good. My stomach growled. The children ran to sit down, filling their plates and wolfing down the food. I refused, standing on the side. I wouldn't play his little game. King Minos saw me, and said,
"Come now, Princess, eat with us. You are our guest of honor. We all value your bravery to come here and save the life of a child. Now, tell me your name and sit down."
I wanted to retaliate, but I knew it was no use. This king was powerful and dangerous, so I gave up and sat down. The only free chair was next to his mighty throne. Lucky me. I reluctantly looked at him and introduced myself.
"I am Ariadne, princess and warrior of Athens, daughter of Aegeus and Aethra."
He smiled. I wanted to punch him. I grabbed a plate and started helping myself to food as well. We burned the biggest lamb to the goddess Demeter, thanking her for a fruitful harvest, and thanked all the other gods as well.
Soon, we were all full and content. I was very tired. I wondered if the king was going to give us to the monster now, right after fattening us and making us tired. As I saw him stand up, I regretted ever listening to him.
"Friends! The day after tomorrow you will finally know why you are here. You were sent here to feed my pet, the Minotaur. He lives in the deadly labyrinth, where you will be brought to tomorrow eve. Tomorrow, we will have games of strength and speed. For now, though, I see you are tired. The maidens have prepared the stables for you to sleep in. Goodnight, and good luck, for the Minotaur is ruthless."
I swallowed. I was scared again, angst biting at me. my mind spiraled into all the what-if scenarios possible. What if I failed? What if I die? What if this never stops? I didn't want more children to die. I didn't want to die. But I would if I had to. I was a warrior, a soldier, and I would sacrifice my needs if it would save other lives. If I could kill the Minotaur, no more children would need to be surrendered. I'm going to end this.
