Minji stood in the dimly lit alley, her chest rising and falling with heavy breaths. The faint sound of distant traffic echoed in the background, but her focus was solely on the figure before her; the bully she had dragged there, now crumpled on the ground, clutching their side and bleeding.

Everything felt like a haze. The adrenaline still coursed through her veins, making her hands tremble slightly. She took a step forward, kneeling down to meet the bully's fearful, defiant gaze. Her own eyes were cold, devoid of the usual warmth she reserved for those she cared about.

In a low, steady voice, Minji spoke, her words carrying a weight that left no room for argument. "Stay out of my sight. Stay out of Haerin's sight. If you even think about coming near us again, you'll regret it."

The bully whimpered, nodding weakly, too stunned to respond verbally. Satisfied, Minji stood up, her expression unchanging. She took a moment to steady her breathing before turning and walking away, the cold air biting at her skin as she made her way home.

Her mind was still a whirlwind of emotions; anger, protectiveness, and a lingering sense of unease, but she knew one thing for certain: she would do whatever it took to protect Haerin.

As Minji stepped into her house, the warm light of the living room did little to soften the cold glare she received from her father. His eyes immediately landed on her disheveled appearance; her bruised lip, the dried blood on her knuckles, and his expression darkened with disapproval.

"Where have you been?" he demanded, his voice low but carrying an unmistakable edge of anger. "Look at yourself. You're coming home late, and like this? What kind of trouble are you getting into now?"

Minji stood silently, her fists clenched at her sides, still feeling the sting from her earlier encounter. She didn't offer an explanation, knowing it would only fuel his temper further. Her father took a step closer, his presence looming over her.

"I'm warning you," he said, his tone cold and stern. "You stay out of trouble, or I'll make sure you regret it. You hear me?"

Minji nodded slightly, her eyes cast downward to avoid his gaze. The tension in the room was suffocating, but she held her ground, biting back any retort that might worsen the situation. Without another word, her father turned and walked away, leaving her standing there, the weight of his warning heavy in the air.

Minji exhaled slowly, her shoulders relaxing just a fraction as she made her way to her room. Despite the scolding, her thoughts drifted back to Haerin, and a sense of resolve settled in her chest. No matter what, she would endure this. She had made a promise; to herself, and to Haerin, and she wasn't going to break it.

Minji climbed the stairs to her room, each step feeling heavier than the last. As she entered, she quietly shut the door behind her, leaning against it for a moment before pushing off and walking over to the mirror. The reflection staring back at her was a stark reminder of the events that had unfolded; her bruised lip, the faint streaks of blood on her knuckles, and the exhaustion etched into her features.

She traced a finger lightly over the swollen skin of her lip, wincing slightly at the tenderness. Her knuckles were raw, the cuts stinging with each flex of her fingers. The girl in the mirror looked distant, almost like a stranger, toughened by the choices she'd made, yet burdened by the weight of her own actions.

Minji's eyes lingered on her reflection, searching for something; strength, maybe, or perhaps reassurance. But all she saw was the same tired girl, worn down by responsibility and the quiet battles she fought every day.

With a sigh, she turned away from the mirror, letting the weight of everything settle in her chest. She knew she couldn't afford to let herself break, not now. There were people depending on her, and she couldn't afford to lose sight of that.

She sat down on the edge of her bed, her mind swirling with thoughts of Haerin and the promise she had silently made. The fight, the confrontation, it had been for her, to protect the quiet strength that Haerin carried. And despite the bruises and the scolding, Minji didn't regret it. Not for a second.

Minji looked up as the soft knock echoed through her room. She hesitated for a moment before getting up and opening the door, revealing Hanni standing there with a somber expression.

"Hanni?" Minji asked, her voice tinged with confusion. "What are you doing here?"

Hanni offered a small, bittersweet smile. "I'm leaving tomorrow," she said softly. "Your dad let me in... I wanted to say goodbye, one last time."

Minji's heart sank at the words. The weight of the day's events seemed to press even harder on her chest. "Leaving?" she repeated, struggling to process the reality of it.

Hanni nodded, her eyes flickering to Minji's lip. "What happened to you?" she asked, concern evident in her voice as she gestured toward the bruise. "Your lip, it looks bad."

Minji reached up instinctively, her fingers grazing the tender skin. "It's nothing," she replied, brushing it off. "Just got into a little trouble."

Hanni's expression softened with a hint of regret. "I'm sorry for everything," she said quietly, her voice laced with genuine remorse. "I didn't mean to push you. You're entitled to your own feelings."

Minji shook her head, a bitter smile playing on her lips. "No, Hanni. It's my fault," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I should've seen the signs. I've always been so clueless, so caught up in my own world."

Hanni's eyes filled with empathy as she stepped closer. Without another word, she wrapped her arms around Minji, pulling her into a gentle hug. Minji stood stiffly for a moment before finally relaxing into the embrace, the tension in her shoulders easing as she allowed herself to be vulnerable.

"You've always carried so much," Hanni murmured, her voice soft and comforting. "It's okay to let someone else carry it with you."

Minji closed her eyes, letting out a shaky breath as she clung to Hanni, the weight of her guilt and pain momentarily lifted by the warmth of her friend's presence.

Minji pulled back slightly from the hug, looking up at Hanni with a quiet question in her eyes. "Are you going to visit? You know, after you leave?"

Hanni gave a small nod, a soft smile tugging at her lips. "Yeah, I'll visit. I won't be gone forever."

Minji's expression softened at the thought. She didn't know when she'd see Hanni again, but the thought of her friend keeping her promise to visit brought a flicker of hope.

Before Hanni left, she placed a gentle hand on Minji's shoulder, her voice serious yet caring. "Minji, stay out of trouble, okay? Take care of yourself."

Minji nodded, her lips curling into a small, bittersweet smile. "I will. You too, Hanni."

With one last, lingering look, Hanni turned to leave. As the door closed behind her, Minji stood there for a moment, letting the silence fill the space before returning to her thoughts.
