The sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore filled the air as Jeremiah sat on the familiar beach, his legs stretched out in front of him. He'd always loved this place, the way the sand felt between his toes, the cool breeze carrying the salty scent of the ocean, but today, it felt different. Today, the beach felt like a reminder of everything he couldn't quite grasp.
He ran a hand through his messy hair, gazing out at the horizon where the water met the sky. The summer sun was just beginning to dip lower, casting a warm, golden glow over the waves. This place had always been home, a place of comfort, but lately, it was a place that felt like a stranger. The air around him was thick with unsaid words, things left hanging in the spaces between him and Belly.
She'd been distant, and he'd noticed. He'd tried to push it down, to ignore the nagging feeling that something was off between them. But no matter how much he tried, it was impossible to shake the feeling that she wasn't fully here with him. Her thoughts, her heart—those belonged to someone else. It wasn't a surprise. Jeremiah had known from the start, from the very first summer they'd met, that Conrad would always be there, lurking in the background, a shadow between them. And while Belly had chosen him, Jeremiah couldn't help but feel like she was still holding onto Conrad in ways he couldn't understand.
He stood up abruptly, shaking the sand off his legs. He couldn't sit here all day, dwelling on things he couldn't change. He had to move, had to do something. But where was the line between trying to fix what felt broken and letting it all slip through his fingers?
The sound of footsteps interrupted his thoughts. He turned, expecting to see Belly, but it was just a group of friends, laughing and carrying a cooler for the bonfire later.
Jeremiah forced a smile, offering a wave, but it didn't reach his eyes. He wasn't in the mood for the carefree chatter of summer. Not today. Not when his world felt like it was unraveling at the seams.
As the group made their way down the beach, his gaze drifted back to the spot where Belly had been earlier. She was talking to Conrad again, their laughter floating toward him like it always did—the sound of shared memories and secret smiles. It stung more than he wanted to admit, but he kept it locked away, hidden behind a layer of pride.
He was Jeremiah Fisher. The guy who always did what was right, who kept his promises, who stayed loyal, even when it hurt. But loyalty, he was beginning to realize, wasn't enough when the person you were loyal to wasn't truly there with you.
He had tried to push it aside—his own feelings of doubt, of loneliness in the relationship—but today, it felt impossible to ignore. Every word he and Belly spoke felt like it was caught in a loop of silence, a constant reminder of the walls between them.
Jeremiah sighed, turning away from the beach. Maybe it was time to stop pretending. Maybe it was time to face the fact that he deserved more than being someone's second choice.
With one last glance at the ocean, he started to walk back to the house. As much as he wanted to stay in the familiar comfort of the beach, he knew the storm inside him was far from over. And somehow, the quiet before the chaos felt worse than the storm itself.
