"Woah... what is that?" Knuckles asks.
"Whatever it is, it's glowing so weirdly! We should stay away from it until I can analyze it properly..." Tails says, walking a little bit away from the crater and back towards the entrance. Amy peeks at the strange crystal in the center of the crater, then quickly joins him.
"Where in the world is Sonic?" She asks, scanning the horizon. Knuckles pipes up from the craters edge.
"For being the 'fastest creature alive' or whatever, he really likes to take his time." He complains. Amy smiles and shakes her head. Tails' gadget makes an odd sound, and he tilts his head.
"Tails? What does that mean?" Amy asks. Knuckles wanders over, curious as well.
"Well... I can't say for certain, but this crystal seems to have some kind of... negative energy? Like rather than putting energy out into the world like any of us do when we go fast or attack, it's taking it." He explains. Amy looks at him with a concerned expression.
"Wait, so what should we do? Is it dangerous?" She asks.
"I'm not sure, but don't worry for now. The amount of energy it's taking isn't enough to cause any damage, just barely enough to be readable." He finishes, tapping the little graph of data on his screen. As they consider this, a flash of blue catches the corner of their eyes and they hear an exclamation.
"Woah!" Sonic shouts, skidding to a stop at the edge of the crater.
"Sonic!" Amy shouts.
"Hey Sonic, you're here! Careful around that though!" Tails adds, jogging over to check on his friend. Sonic blinks a few times at the crystal, then balances himself and looks at Tails.
"Sure, what the heck is that?" He asks. Tails shrugs.
"We were just figuring that out. It's strange, it seems to be taking small amounts of energy from the world." He explains again. Sonic tilts his head.
"So when we run or attack we give off energy, right? Well this thing takes it instead. But Tails said it wasn't enough to be super dangerous." Amy adds. Sonic nods.
"Ohhh okay, soooo... what do we do? This wasn't always here, right? Should I destroy it?" Sonic asks. Tails shakes his head.
"You probably shouldn't go near it for now, we don't know how it would react to us."
"Hm. Soooo are we just gonna hang out in this cave?" Sonic asks, looking around a little restlessly. Tails giggles.
"Yes, Sonic. At least for now, I'll run some small tests and see what I can learn about the crystal, then we can decide what to do about it."
"Gotcha." Sonic gives him a thumbs up, and plops himself down somewhere at the edge of the cave. He looks around, kicking his feet and leaning against the wall. Amy and Knuckles come and sit next to him.
"So, what took you so long?" Knuckles asks.
"Ohh well some rocks from that explosion landed a little close to a village so I figured I'd check it out!" Sonic explains. Amy smiles.
"That's our Sonic, always being the hero." She says warmly. Sonic scratches his head a little bashfully.
"Well, you know... I just wanna make sure everyone is okay." He says. Amy nods, and Knuckles shakes his head but still smiles. They sit quietly for a second before Sonic sighs.
"Tailllllls?"
"Yeah, Sonic?"
"Are you done yet?" He asks, getting up and stretching. Tails snickers and rolls his eyes.
