Sweat dripped down her skin, her body draped over the sheets. Her head pounded with the rhythm of her heart thump, thump, thump over and over again, as she focused on the relentless beat. She finally fell into a deep slumber. The hours felt like seconds as the sound of his beating heart echoed in her hand, pulsing, writhing. His voice screamed, trembling with tears. Ripped from her nightmares, she bolted upright. Her heart pounded faster as she wiped the sweat from her brow, gripping the bed frame to steady herself while fumbling to flick on the lights. Dizzy from standing, she finally managed to walk toward the kitchen, the floor creaking beneath her. Her mind was tired yet alert as she reached for the cabinet. She grabbed a thick glass and filled it with water, letting the cool liquid flow down her throat. But as she lowered the glass, she froze. Blood was pooling on the floor. Panicked, she stepped back, only to trip, shards of glass embedding themselves in her feet. Screaming, she fell, but a warm, soft hand caught hers.
