"You found it." I spun around, heart racing, but the room was empty.
For a moment, I questioned my sanity. Was I hearing things or had someone else entered the room without me noticing? Then, the air shifted—like someone had just stepped into my personal space. The feeling was familiar, like the pull of a magnetic force. But when I turned again, there was no one in sight. It wasn't until my hand brushed the edge of the table that I realized it wasn't my imagination.
The map had begun to glow, responding to my touch. The symbols on the engraving swirled, transforming into a new pattern—one that I couldn't yet decipher. Whoever had spoken—whoever had been watching me—was still out there, somewhere. But for now, I had what I came for.
The next step was clear: uncover the rest of the Code, piece by piece, and find out what it all meant. The walls of the mansion seemed to close in as I traced the shifting symbols. The deeper I went, the more I realized that this was bigger than I had anticipated. And the more dangerous it became.
Because the truth, I suspected, was something no one was prepared for.
I was so absorbed in the glowing map before me that I nearly missed the sound of soft footsteps behind me. But there it was, unmistakable—the creak of the floorboards, like someone trying to move silently through the room.
I whipped around, my hand instinctively reaching for the hidden blade at my side. The room was still empty.
But it wasn't just the footsteps that were bothering me. There was a presence—an unseen force pressing against me. I couldn't see it, but I could feel it, like a weight on my chest. I wasn't alone. I turned back to the table, eyes scanning the map. The symbols had shifted again, and now I could make out a faint path running through them, leading me deeper into the mansion. But something didn't sit right. I wasn't sure whether the map was trying to guide me or trap me. With a deep breath, I carefully folded the map into my coat, determined to follow its path, even if it meant walking into the unknown.
I moved through the corridors, keeping my senses alert. The mansion felt even more like a maze now, with every hallway seeming to lead to another. I had no idea where I was going, but something urged me forward. As I passed a set of large windows, I caught a fleeting glimpse of a figure outside. It was fleeting, just a shadow, but it was enough to send a chill down my spine.
Who was watching me?
Before I could stop myself, I rushed towards the nearest door and threw it open. The room beyond was dark, save for a single candle flickering in the corner. But the moment I stepped inside, I felt it—the shift in the air, the heavy weight of something ancient. The door slammed shut behind me. I froze. It wasn't the wind. It was deliberate.
"Welcome to my domain," a voice said from the darkness.
The voice in the darkness echoed again, lingering longer this time, like it was wrapped in a veil of mystery and foreboding. My instincts screamed for me to turn and leave, to trust my gut and retreat—but I didn't. I couldn't. Instead, I gripped the hilt of my blade, stepping forward, every muscle taut with readiness. My eyes scanned the shadowed room, trying to pierce through the oppressive darkness that seemed to grow thicker the longer I stood there. And then, I saw it. A silhouette—slender, tall, and moving with an eerie grace.
The figure was so still, so deliberate, that for a brief moment, I wondered if they were a part of the mansion itself, a ghost brought to life by the secrets embedded within its walls. The voice came again, soft and almost melodic, but with an underlying sharpness.
"I see you've found it... the Code." I froze.
The voice wasn't a stranger, but it wasn't someone I recognized either. My mind raced—who could possibly know what I was looking for? I had come here with a singular purpose, and yet this voice, this presence, suggested there was more to this place than I could have ever anticipated.
