The Silent Note
Ha-Eun’s life was a symphony composed of routines and expectations. Every morning, her world began with the crisp sound of violin strings and ended with the applause of strangers who saw her as a prodigy rather than a person. But beneath her flawless performances lay a loneliness that no ovation could fill.
One evening, on her way home from practice, she stumbled upon something that broke the monotony—a massive mural on the side of an abandoned building. The painting depicted a woman cradling a shattered violin under a stormy sky, her tears forming rivers that bled into the city below.
Something about it stirred her soul.
Curious, she stepped closer, her fingers trailing the rough surface. The details were breathtaking, almost alive. Who could have painted this? And why did it feel as though the artist had seen straight into her heart?
Before she could dwell further, a voice broke the silence.
“Touch it all you want, but it won’t fix your problems.”
Startled, Ha-Eun spun around to see a man leaning casually against a lamppost, a spray can in his hand. His clothes were smudged with paint, and his dark eyes held a mix of defiance and curiosity.
“Did you make this?” she asked, her voice a mix of awe and accusation.
“Yeah,” he replied with a shrug. “Why? Planning to criticize?”
“No,” she said, her tone softening. “It’s… beautiful.”
For a moment, the stranger seemed caught off guard, but then his lips curled into a smirk. “I don’t paint for compliments.”
“Then why do you paint?” she countered.
“To feel alive,” he said simply. “Why do you play the violin?”
Ha-Eun hesitated. For the first time in years, she didn’t have an answer.
