The Thing About Family

Start from the beginning

"I swear, Buck, if you say it's not your place again... It is. It is your place." This is your place. I'm your palace. We're your place... "I want you in this... I'm sure he does too... I mean, if you want to be..."

"Eds, I'm in your will. I'm pretty sure I'm already in this. I just didn't know how much of my input you were comfortable w-"

"All of it, Buck. You're my best friend and we're family. I want all of your input." Eddie shouldn't be able to flip the 'wanna jump your bones' to 'best friend' switch so easily, but it's Buck; both sides of the switch work so well...

"I'll... I'll be there then. Just let me know when to come over, or if you want, we can do it at my place."

"Yeah, we can do it at your place. He's a little busy the next few days, so I think it'll probably be a little bit, but I'll let you know."

Buck picks a movie, they watch it, then find a few excuses for Buck to stay longer, but he does end up leaving. It didn't feel right to go back to jumping his bones after going into best friend mode.

"So, how are you doing?" Maddie leans over the counter as she waits for the stove to heat up.

"I'm alright. How are you feeling? Any nausea or anything?"

"Buck..."

"I promise I'm not worrying about you. I'm asking the normal pregnancy questions. I heard you when you said you didn't want me to over-"

"No, I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about how you're doing. You don't have to pretend with me. I'm your big sister. You know I'm always here for you."

"What? I meant it when I said I was alright. I'm seriously doing okay."

"It's been almost two weeks since your breakup and you're telling me you're completely fine?"

"Maybe not completely, but relatively, yes." Sure, sometimes Buck still spirals about how he wasn't good enough in the relationship with Tommy, but other than that, all his thoughts are EddieEddieEddieEddie. And how could he not be happy about that?

"You've barely even told me what happened. I know about the Abby thing, but you never told me about what happened after that."

"Oh, come on, you're telling me Chimney hasn't told you?" He gives her a doubtful look.

"You told Chimney but not me?"

"No, I told Hen, who I assumed told Chimney who I assume told the entire world."

"Well, Hen must have kept it to herself, because I haven't heard a word about it from Chim."

"Well... long story short. We moved past the Abby thing pretty quickly, I asked him to move in, he said no, then I went to Eddie's, and he wasn't wearing pants."

"Wait, what?"

"He was dancing Risky Business I guess-"

"No, you asked Tommy to what?"

Buck sighs... actually, it's more of a huff. "I asked him to move in."

"Buck... Josh asked you if you loved him, and you looked near terrified. I don't care how much you liked him; you weren't ready for that..."

"Yeah, I got that now, and he got that pretty quickly too."

"Why did you ask him to move in?"

"I don't know... I guess I thought I fucked things up by hiding the Abby thing, then he was cool about it and Josh asked me all those other questions about picturing a future, and at the time, I thought I could, and I just wanted to jump into it."
