The sun hung low over Istanbul, casting golden light on the bustling Grand Bazaar, where the scent of spices mingled with the sound of haggling voices. Melike Sahin wove through the throngs of people, her dark hair hidden beneath a scarf, her eyes scanning the crowd. She had learned long ago that in a world of shadows, discretion was her greatest ally.
Today, however, she wasn't just another merchant's daughter. She was a force to be reckoned with—a player in the dangerous game of power that ruled the city's underbelly. The streets whispered her name, and the fear it inspired made her smile.
As she approached a secluded corner of the bazaar, Melike's heart raced, but not from fear. She was on a mission. Rumors of a shipment containing a new drug formula had reached her ears, and she intended to seize it before it fell into the hands of her father's rivals. Her family had long controlled the eastern side of Istanbul, but competition was fierce, and a recent uptick in violence reminded her that the balance of power could shift at any moment.
Melike ducked into a narrow alley, where the vibrant market sounds faded into an echoing silence. Here, the shadows were her allies, concealing her from prying eyes. She reached a wooden door marked only by a faded symbol, the sign of a black market dealer known for his discreet transactions.
"Melike," the dealer greeted, his voice low and wary. "What brings you here today?"
"Word of a shipment," she replied, her tone cool and authoritative. "I need details."
The dealer hesitated, his eyes flickering with uncertainty. "It's dangerous, kadIn. The Asker gang has been watching the routes closely. If they catch you—"
"They won't," she interrupted, a glint of defiance in her gaze. "I'm not afraid of them."
With a reluctant nod, he opened the door wider, beckoning her inside. The room was dimly lit, filled with crates and the scent of incense masking something more sinister. Malike stepped in, her senses heightened, aware that danger lurked just beyond the veil.
As she surveyed the room, her instincts kicked in. "What do you have for me?" she pressed, leaning closer to the dealer. "A shipment of Talon," he said, lowering his voice.
She raised in eyebrow in disregard. "Talon? What is it? A drug from China again?"
"Its origin is from Myanmar, more south Asian. Its chemical makeup can be shifted as well as its physical properties. Mostly sold in pills, but can also be interchangeable with vials of orange liquid."
The man paused, seemingly concerned for the girl.
"Melike, I must warn you, the Askers are planning to move the shipment tonight. If you can intercept it before they do—"
Before he could finish, the sound of shuffling footsteps echoed from the back of the room. Melike's muscles tensed. She had learned to trust her instincts, and something felt very wrong.
Suddenly, the door burst open, and a group of men entered, their faces obscured by dark hoods. She recognized the insignia on their jackets—a crescent blade, associated with the Asker gang members, notorious for their ruthless tactics and unforgiving nature.
"Melike Sahin," one of the men sneered, his voice dripping with contempt. "We've been looking for you."
Melike's heart raced, but she held her ground. "You've come to the wrong place," she said, her voice steady despite the fear clawing at her insides. "This is Sahin territory."
"Not anymore," he growled, stepping closer, his hand resting on the hilt of a knife.
Without thinking, Melike spun on her heel, bolting for the door. Adrenaline surged through her veins as she darted down the alley, the sounds of pursuit close behind. She could hear their footsteps echoing, the shouts growing louder.
Heart pounding, she turned a corner, searching for an escape route. The narrow streets of the bazaar were a maze, but she knew them well. She needed to lose them before they caught up.
She ran through the streets, turning corners, and jumping over carts. She turned a corner, sure there was another way out. But she misinterpreted. A dead end. She turned as she the thugs walked in on the alley, cornering her.
"There is no way out of this, Melike Hatun," one of them barked.
The leader of the group stepped towards her, pulling out a dagger. Melike anticipated a fight, but she really didn't want to get her hands dirty with these halfwits.
The goon lunged at her, swinging his dagger, but Melike swiftly stepped back. She drove a knee towards the guy, and used his own momentum to punch him back. The guy dropped the knife and she kicked it away, going back into a fighting stance.
Just like that, she dealt with the other mobsters. As she stood up from punching down the last guy, she wiped her brow with her sleeve. Her eyes trailed over all the injured. She walked over to the leader that she had beat earlier, checking his pockets for any ID or contents.
But suddenly, the guy had grabbed her wrist and pulled her down. She grunted as her back hit the wet cobblestone. The man started to punch her face, her head jerking back with each hit.
"That's enough, Ismet."
A voice rang out from behind. Calm, cool, collected.
The man, who's name revealed to be Ismet, looked up behind him, reluctantly stepping back from Melike on the ground.
Her eyes were blurry with pain, her nose bleeding, a cut above her eyebrow, and bruises starting to color on her jaw and cheeks.
"Not looking too good there, Sahin," the voice spoke again, almost a hint of ridicule.
Melike lifted her head, trying to blink through to who was speaking. Her vision slightly focused as she looked up, seeing a rather good looking man crouching over her.
His dark hair that was slightly gelled back, one strand out over his forehead, falling almost perfectly, a suit with a dark brown cloak, and light blue eyes staring back at her.
"What, are you here to kill me?" she muttered, a hint of pain in her voice.
The guy scoffed lightly. "On the eve of Eid Al-Fitr? Please, I'm not a monster. But, let's just say, you won't be returning to your father this evening, either."
Melike's brows furrowed in confusion, but through her blurred vision she could see the guy pull out a handkerchief, douse it in a liquid, and than press it to her nose.
"Don't fight it, Sahin, it'll be harder for the both of us if you do."
She tried to her hold her breath as much as she could, but she eventually gave into the chemical's drowsy pull. The last thing she heard being a mocking phrase in turkish, "İyi geceler, melek", which translated to, "nighty night, angel."
