In a small town like Derry, nothing ever happened. It was like the town was stuck in ice, frozen. The only difference between the days that passed was the weather. And sometimes that wouldn't change for weeks. Never moving, never changing. it was like the whole town was asleep and had been that way for a long time. It wasn't dead, no, the town was alive. But not in a vibrant way, it was alive in a way that suggested that no one there truly lived.
The people who lived in Derry were rather curious too. They all walked around, doing the same things they always did. Each one stuck in old prejudice and grudges. The people who lived there had always lived there. It was rare when a new person moved to Derry, and it usually didn't last long. Basically, any place was better than Derry, and any new person figured that out relatively quickly. Well, any normal person.
Sonia Kaspbrak was so excited when she had found Derry. It was exactly the kind of place she wanted her son to live. It was small, and exceedingly boring. To her, it was the safest place for her precious angel. After she had lost her husband, she had nothing except Eddie. She was nothing apart from her son. He was sunshine, pure perfection, and she was nothing but an old woman.
At one point she had wanted her son to grow up, to be his own person. But after the last town and the horrible screw up that turned out to be, she was taking matters into her own hands.
The son in question, though, was not as thrilled to find out about Derry. He tried to squirm his way out of the move for months. But instead, here he sat, in a car filled with heavy suitcases and even heavier silence. Sonia readjusted her rearview mirror to better see her sons face at the stop sign.
"We're almost there Eddie Bear." She said in a sing-song voice trying to lighten the mood.
He sighed and looked away into the window and covered his mouth with his hand. His scowl said more to Sonia then any of the words he'd yelled at her over the past month ever did. He obviously wasn't happy, he was broken. And Sonia would do anything to make him better.
'That reminds me did he take his pills? Or is he skipping them again. Too bad they don't have pills that could make someone always take their pills.'
"Eddie Bear, did you take your pills for me?" Sonia trying yet again to pour honey over her voice.
When Eddie didn't respond, she began to get agitated. How dare he ignore her when she was asking about something so important as his pills. He knew he should take them, but he often refused or forgot. Now she had to check in with him multiple times a day for her own sanity.
"Did you take your pills? Eddie answer me!" Sonia asked yet again not even trying to hide her annoyance.
"Yeah" Eddie mumbled against the hand that was still covering his mouth.
Sonia sighed, turning her full attention back on the road. They were so close to their new home. And she wasn't going to let Eddie's foul mood spoil her own happiness. That boy could be so selfish sometimes, just like his father. But other than his temper and selfishness, he really was the best kid. He never meant anyone any harm, and he always tried to do the right thing.
She thrummed her large fingers on the steering wheel as they pulled into the driveway of the new house. It was quaint but it would do. And besides, this place was going to be the best for Eddie. No more of that gay nonsense he had gotten into last year. No more "forgetting" his pills. And most definitely no more walking into dangerous situations to help out friends.
"Eddie, come on. Grab some bags and I'll show you around the house. Our house!" Sonia hurried out of the car, well as fast as she could, which was most people's average speed. She pulled out checked the code on her phone and pushed open the front door. Her home.
'It's perfect. The perfect place for our perfect family.'
