I paused, hands on my knees, gasping for breath as the steep incline of the trail loomed ahead. The forest was dense, the canopy above filtering the sunlight into dappled patterns on the ground. My legs felt like lead, each step more difficult than the last. This part of the trail was supposed to be the hardest, and right now, it felt impossible.

"Come on, Elizabeth," I muttered to myself. "You can do this."

The divorce papers had barely been signed when I decided to take this hike. I thought the solitude and challenge would help me find myself, rediscover who I was outside of a marriage that had consumed me for years. But now, with the sweat pouring down my face and my heart pounding in my chest, it felt more like punishment than a journey of self-discovery.

I straightened up, wiping my forehead with the back of my hand, and looked up at the trail ahead. The incline seemed endless, a jagged path cutting through the dense forest. Birds chirped somewhere above, their songs mocking my struggle. I took a deep breath, trying to summon the energy to keep going.

"You wanted this," I reminded myself. "You wanted to prove you could do something on your own."

Each step felt like a victory, a small triumph over the doubts and fears that had plagued me since the divorce. My ex-husband's voice echoed in my head, telling me I wasn't strong enough, that I'd never make it on my own. With each step, I silenced him a little more, proving to myself that I was stronger than I knew.

Gritting my teeth, I tried to block out the echo of his voice, focusing instead on the sound of my boots crunching against the rocky path. I was halfway up the incline when I noticed the light around me dimming. I glanced up, my eyes widening as I saw dark, angry clouds rolling in. This wasn't part of the plan. I had checked the weather before leaving this morning—it was supposed to be clear skies all day, not even a hint of rain, let alone a storm.

A sense of unease settled in my chest. The sudden shift in weather felt like a bad omen, a reminder of how unpredictable life could be. A loud clap of thunder echoed through the forest, and I flinched, my heart racing. The air seemed to thicken, charged with an electric energy that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Just as I thought it couldn't get worse, the sky opened up. Rain began to pour down, cold and relentless, soaking me in seconds. I stood there, stunned, as the water streamed down my face, blurring my vision. The trail beneath my feet quickly turned slick and treacherous, making each step a potential hazard.

I glanced around, searching for any sort of shelter, but there was nothing—just trees and the unyielding path ahead. The rain pounded against the leaves, creating a deafening roar that drowned out everything else. My thoughts raced as I tried to figure out what to do next. Turning back felt like defeat, but pressing on in these conditions was dangerous.

Taking a shaky breath, tears of frustration mingling with the rain on my face, I felt a wave of despair wash over me. So much for finding myself. The storm was relentless, and it felt like nature itself was against me. I turned back, deciding that it was safer to retreat than to risk my life. But the weather had other plans.

The wind picked up, and the rain came down even harder, blurring my vision and making it nearly impossible to see. I squinted against the onslaught, trying to navigate my way down the treacherous path. The wind pushed me sideways, and I struggled to keep my balance, feeling the ground low slipping away beneath my feet.

Suddenly, a powerful gust hit me just right, and I lost my footing. I tried to grab onto something, anything, but it was too late. With a terrified cry, I careened off the trail's edge, tumbling down a steep ravine. My body hit rocks and trees, each impact sending jolts of pain through me. I screamed, the sound lost in the storm, as I felt myself falling uncontrollably down the hillside.
