But now, looking at Tomass, with the hurt barely hidden beneath the cool exterior, Alex felt like he had made a huge mistake.
"Tomass, can we talk about what I said during the games?" Alex began softly, leaning forward.
Tomass finally looked up, his blue eyes sharp but filled with an unspoken pain.
"What's there to talk about? You want to date Dion. That's great. Congratulations." The Latvian said harshly.
His voice was bitter, laced with sarcasm, and Alex flinched at the harshness of it.
"That's not what I meant," Alex said quickly, desperate to fix things. "I didn't even think it through. I was just talking without thinking."
Tomass raised an eyebrow, leaning back in his chair. "Really? You didn't think it through? You don't just tell someone something like that without meaning it, Powell."
Alex's throat tightened. This was going worse than he'd imagined. Tomass and he almost never fought but the fact the Latvian called him by his surname was a sign it was bad.
"I know. I know it sounded bad, but the truth is" He paused, gathering the courage to say what had been lingering in his mind for too long. "The truth is, I don't want to date Dion."
Tomass crossed his arms. "Then why did you say it?"
Alex rubbed the back of his neck nervously, his heart thumping in his chest. He needed to be honest now. If he didn't, he might lose his friendship with Tomass for good.
"I said it because I was scared," Alex admitted, his voice low. "I don't actually like Dion in that way. I said it because- because I'm scared of how I feel about you."
That seemed to catch Tomass off guard. His posture softened slightly, but there was still confusion written all over his face. "What are you talking about?"
Alex looked down, too afraid to meet Tomass's gaze.
"I didn't know how to tell you, okay? I've liked you for a while, but I didn't think you'd ever feel the same way. And saying I'd date Dion was stupid, like some messed-up way of distancing myself from what I really feel." The younger prema driver tried to explain.
Tomass sat there, speechless, staring at Alex like he was trying to process the confession.
"Sorry I shoudn't have said that." The Jamaican said standing up to order a coffee, trying to escape the akward situation.
When the younger came back at the table Tomass was sitting Kean and Dion were also sitting there.
Luckily the 16 year old thought, now he didn't need to talk about it
