Joshua could still feel the adrenaline rushing through his veins as he collapsed onto the couch. His heart pounded with the excitement of his first-ever race victory.
He had done it.
After months of hard work, training, and battling doubts, he had crossed that finish line first. The cheers of the crowd still echoed in his mind, but all of that faded away when Taylor sat down beside him.
Without a word, Taylor pulled Joshua into a tight embrace, and Joshua melted into it, feeling his racing heart finally start to slow.
The warmth of Taylor's arms around him brought a new sense of calm and joy that the finish line couldn't give him.
His boyfriend's touch was gentle but firm, a reminder that he had someone by his side, not just during the victory but every step leading up to it.
"I'm so proud of you," Taylor whispered, his breath soft against Joshua's ear.
Joshua looked up, meeting Taylor's eyes. His boyfriend's face was lit up with a smile, not the broad, beaming kind, but the kind that reached his eyes and softened his whole expression.
It was the smile that made Joshua feel like everything would be okay, no matter what.
"I couldn't have done it without you," Joshua replied, his voice low, the emotion of the day catching up with him.
He shifted closer, resting his head on Taylor's chest, the steady rhythm of Taylor's heartbeat soothing him.
The two of them sat there in silence for a while, the afternoon sun casting a golden glow through the window, bathing them in warmth.
Taylor ran his fingers gently through Joshua's hair, still damp from the race, and Joshua let out a contented sigh, closing his eyes as he leaned into the touch. The weight of the day, the nerves, the competition, the noise—it all seemed distant now, like it belonged to another world. Here, in Taylor's arms, he could just be Joshua, not the racer, not the guy who just won his first big race, but the guy who was loved, completely and unconditionally.
"You were amazing out there," Taylor said softly, kissing the top of Joshua's head. "I knew you could do it."
Joshua smiled, eyes still closed, his hand resting on Taylor's chest, feeling the steady rise and fall of his breathing. "I didn't know I could," he admitted. "Not until I saw you waiting for me at the finish line."
Taylor's arms tightened around him slightly, as if to say, I'm always here. The unspoken promise lingered between them, stronger than any words could express.
Joshua let himself sink further into the moment, the exhaustion of the day finally catching up with him.
He didn't care about anything else right now not the celebration, not the photos, not the trophy.
All he cared about was this: the quiet, the warmth, and the love that wrapped around him as securely as Taylor's embrace.
It was a victory, not just of the race, but of knowing he had someone who would hold him like this through every win, every loss, and everything in between.
