The BOX.
The probably best constructed illusion in the past century that has been leading people on for over two decades, letting them see what they want instead of the dark truth.
Its first reveal was on the day the world was supposed to end, as the 21st century started, on January 1st 2000.
While people were either celebrating the new year or shaking in fear of their doom the governments of most countries decided to reveal their joint project to the world.
The BOX was announced to be a research and educational center for those who were born with a special and very rare genetic mutation called the ENC-7 as it kept appearing more in the last decade.
This had of course surprised the citizens as they've never heard of a thing like this nor understood why a person with a genetic mutation needed special treatment until someone explained that those would have something akin to psychic powers and the world went crazy.
Questions as to why those mutations appeared as well as accusations of the government secretly testing out suspicious substances on the citizens to cause these were just a few of the topics.
The head researcher of the organization explained that it was highly possible that the increase of genetically modified food resources were the cause of the larger number of mutations appearing, and people easily bought his story.
What followed this was masses of people getting their DNA mapped to see if they had the mutation by chance or were a carrier without it getting to expression in hopes of becoming part of the BOX.
There were advertisements about the facilities inside the secret building nobody knew the location of, rumors about how nice it was and about the royal treatment one would get there for being special.
Governments made new laws requiring every newborn to be tested and marked if they had the mutation for close observing through the first few years until ready to enter the BOX.
Schools had required for the kids to have gone through testing before starting first grade and tested every student before the new school year started.
By the end of the year there were over three thousand cases registered all around the world where the mutated gene was present and half of them were born in that year.
Surprisingly though, the birthrate with children carrying the mutation fell each consecutive year making people wonder if there was something else that went on during that time when the first batch of Neo ENC-7 babies was born.
Labeled and registered by their birthday the children were being monitored in case they showed symptoms of the mutated gene coming to expression leading to development of special talents.
As researchers continued to dive deeper into the changes they came to the conclusion that the mutation could only get to expression until the child was still growing and that after a certain age it would not be able to develop changes.
This discovery made the focus shift to the youngest population while those who knew were latent carriers of the gene hoped to be able to have their offspring inherit it.
Those with the mutation were considered higher ranking humans that were more developed, leading the world into a new kind of chaos and discrimination.
