“Just in the bathroom,” I said. That was a close one. But I wondered, What the heck is happening…and why?!

As soon as I got home, I demanded answers from Eileen and Bryan, my foster parents.

Once they were positive that I’d discovered it by myself, they told me the truth. They weren’t my parents and I was a wizard. I was shell-shocked.

Obviously the first instinct anyone has is to either think you’re dreaming, or simply not believe it. But once they explained more, and once Elliot confirmed, I knew they weren’t lying.

At first, I thought it was kind of cool. I told them how I suddenly got these sudden power bursts in the heat, and we labeled heat as my element. Eileen would make fires in the pit and I’d go stand by it, gathering as much heat as possible, and we’d practice spells. Of course I wasn’t as strong as in California, but a little fire was better than nothing.

Once I’d been told more about my history, about why I really did have magic, I’d labeled myself as doomed. Wizards like me, simple kids only trying to live a normal life until they’ve figured out their magical prowess, are meant to fight. They’re meant to fight against the evil of The Realm – the Five Wises. The Wises are the wizards that started the element powers. The first Wise: the Water Wise, the second Wise: the Ice Wise, the third Wise: the Weather and Nature Wise, the fourth Wise: the Light and Darkness Wise, and the fifth Wise: the Fire Wise. All of the Wises are supposedly evil – except there’s a catch. The fifth Wise is yet to be discovered. That Wise is supposed to be the only good Wise, and in the awful situation where the Wises team up, the Fire Wise will be the only one to save The Realm from annihilation. And the other four Wises would do anything to destroy Wise Five before he or she could destroy them.

As soon as I saw those gray eyes, I knew something was up…most likely something bad. I was in the shower, covered in water, obviously, so I couldn’t feel any magic in the air. Water is my weak element.

I quickly turned off the water flow, grabbed the towel and dried myself swiftly. I hopped out of the shower, threw on a robe, and put the towel around my dark brown hair. I was still wet, so I couldn’t feel any magic yet – but I knew it was there, my eyes never lie.

I opened the door to my bathroom, and I heard a scream – Eileen!

I then heard grunts from the kitchen, but not anyone’s normal grunt from my family. I was sure it was a Follower. Followers are the Wises minions. Each Wise has at least ten. They are creatures, hard to explain, but they somehow relate to their Wise’s element.

I heard Elliot yelp and then heard a sharp piercing noise, what seemed to be a bolt of ice. Then everything went silent. He must’ve frozen the Follower.

I ran downstairs with wet hair – not smart. But my family was in trouble! I saw Elliot leaning against the fridge, panting, and Bryan holding the frozen tree-like thing. It must’ve been the Weather and Nature Wise’s Follower.

“Macy!” Eileen yelled.

I looked around, observing the jumbled kitchen. Pots and pans everywhere, the milk had been thrown out of the fridge and spilled all over the floor. “What…happened?” I asked, softly and stunned.

“Did you see…I…the Follower…” Elliot added weakly, but couldn’t finish.

“Shh, Elliot. Macy, dry yourself off right now!”

“I’m sorry, I couldn’t feel the magic, I was in the shower, I…”

“It’s okay, it’s not your fault. Nobody was expecting that,” Eileen reassured me. “But please, go dry your hair. Don’t leave yourself open for attack anytime.”
