"I'll know it when I see it," Jameson said, almost assuring himself.
"Or maybe I will." Avery straightened out.
I saw a flicker of realisation in Jameson's eyes and I knew immediately what he wanted to do.
His eyes darted between me and Avery as he said, "Sometimes, you just need a different point of view."
Jameson jumped up onto the railing and started to walk across the bridge looking down into the water. I saw the rising panic on Avery's face as he walked getting closer to falling off the edge. She didn't understand that in a way all the Hawthorne's were a strange type of invincible. They could dangle off bridges, race cars at speeds too fast or jump off bridges and they would still only come out of it with a scratch.
"We need to look below," Jameson said. He climbed to the far side of the railing, balancing on the bridge's edge. "Grab my legs," He tried to tell us before stopping. "No. I'm too big. Even with the two of you, I might get dropped."
"Thanks for doubting my strength Jamie." I rolled my eyes.
He ignored my comment and continued, "I'll have to hold on to one of you two."
I looked over to Avery and nodded to her to do it.
She pointed at herself before starting to argue, "Me. No way. You do it."
"There is no way Annabelle will agree to do that. Please, Avery." Jameson
Avery wanted to solve it. Even being as nervous as she was, she agreed.
Jameson braced his hand on her hips and I stood over to watch her hang before walking off to check the other parts of the bridge. Everything seems to be in place. I walk over to a spot that squeaks. I push my foot on it and the wood lifts.
If there is a clue here it is under that piece of wood. I bend down and try to lift it. It was stuck. There was another lever or button that I would need to twist around. I felt around the board of wood. There it was. On each side of the board there were small knots in the wood. I pressed it letting the wood twist open till it faced upward.
Carved into the wood was the infinity symbol. Or the letter eight.
"Jameson," I call out. "Pull Avery up and get over here." He obliged and I watched as they both stood up and walked over to me. "Look at this."
"Infinity," Jameson bent down and traced the symbol with his finger.
Avery copied, "Or eight."
---------------------------------------------------
Avery and Jameson had already stared walking back. But I spotted something. Or someone.
"Grayson Hawthorne, doesn't seem like you can leave anything alone." He turned around lowering his eyes to mine.
"Well do you mind telling me what you found?" He asked. His hair somehow was still sitting perfect on his head. Everything about him was always spot on and he never made any mistakes. It was different from my two messy French braids, ripped t-shirt, and dirty shoes. I also seemed to ruin everything and I could never possibly be perfect.
I stared at him. I wanted him to want to win again. I wanted him to stop thinking that he didn't deserve to win.
"Admit that you want another puzzle and you want to win it." I continued pushing a stray hair away from my face, "Then I will tell you exactly what we found and a clue on what you need to look for next."
Grayson didn't want to admit it. But he would. He might have not needed my help but some part of him would always want it.
"I want to win another of my Grandfather's games." He held his gaze taking a small step closer to me, "I need it. and I need to win it."
I Let out a slow breath, "you and your brothers last names have a meaning. Whether it is a place or object. Westbrook, Nash's middle name, Has an infinity symbol. Or and eight."
I watched his face shift into thinking mode, "What's next?" He asked.
"Winchester."
"Jameson's middle name." We were both standing inhumanly still my body refused to move. Part of me wanted to run and the other part wanted to lean into him. I didn't let myself to either.
"Your Grandfather was very fond of his rifles."
