Goddamn it

Goddamn it.

I clenched my jaw as I stared at the flatscreen, disbelief washing over me, but it was quickly replaced by anger.

"...it is my duty and honour to bring back order, justice and peace to our city and community," the new Police Commissioner, Frank Kennedy, droned on. "Too long has this city been controlled by vermin-like criminals, who skillfully hide behind different facades - and I will remove those facades, one by one, and bring them to justice!"

The crowds cheered loudly as the dark-haired asshole waved like the schmuck he was, my fists balled up tightly against the armrest of my chair. Leave it to the former Commissioner to retire early just because he preferred golfing and spending time with his family rather than look the other way so that people like me could get shit done.

And to have this new fella replace him was a real kick in the balls, to say the least. I was familiar with Frank Kennedy and his upright way of thinking, known for never ever thinking about strolling on the fun side of life.

Someone needed to remove that stick out of his ass...

"Boss?"

I looked up and saw my underboss and right hand, Danny DeLuca, eye me expectantly. "Hm," I mused, leaning back in my chair. "Do we have anything on him?"

"Nada," he said, looking annoyed. "Not even a parking ticket, that guy is squeaky clean!"

He said the last part with a visible shudder, as if the fact of someone being so clean and proper disgusted him. People like us didn't exactly mingle with those kind of people - people always had secrets they wanted to keep hidden, so on the rare occasion when we stumbled upon someone who didn't, it took us by surprise.

I rubbed my face with my hand, the Moretti family rings clinking as I did so. "We need to find a way," I muttered, sighing heavily. "Did Mia set a date?"

Danny looked unfazed by the sudden change of topic. "Xavier said something about September," he said with a shrug. "Could still change - you know Mia."

I chuckled. As if it wasn't enough to have an impossible twin-sister like Mia, she had somewhat gone against the family and gotten herself engaged to some regular guy Xavier Ramirez. Lucky for her, she was doted on by the whole family, so we really didn't have the heart to deny her happiness - and Xavier had earned my respect as well by showing up to ask for my blessing, even if Mia had tried to stop him.

I guess she thought I'd put a bullet in his head - which did cross my mind, but Mia would've put a bullet in mine, and she always had a bad aim.

It was like an ongoing joke that it was the women who made the Moretti men weak. Whether it was our mothers, sisters or wives, we probably would go to war for them. I was in no hurry to wife a woman up and enhance that rule, much to Mia's disappointment and effort. The amount of women she had tried to steer in my way was almost ridiculous - I could find my women just fine, but only to keep me entertained for an hour or so.
