Saying goodbye

Robert and Natasha were set to leave for Germany at the end of the month, which was just three weeks away. They had agreed to make a fresh start together, determined not to look over their shoulders.

As they sat alone in Andy's office, they clinked their glasses together in a toast to new beginnings. Their eyes locked, and as Robert set his glass down, he moved closer to her. Whispering about the promise of a new start, he made the first move and leaned in to kiss her. She kissed him back.

The following morning, Robert was the first to wake up. He opened his eyes to find a naked Andy wrapped in his arms, possibly still asleep. He lay there for a few minutes before getting up to pick up his clothes from the floor.

They hadn't discussed their one night of passion; in fact, they both tried to avoid being alone together. Andy was happy for Robert that he had sorted things out with Natasha. She left dinner early, claiming she wasn't feeling well. Vic noticed her departure and followed her.

Vic: "Wow, so he gets his happy ending." She tried to initiate a conversation.

Andy: "Yeah, good for him," she replied.

Vic: "How do you feel about it?" she asked.

Andy: "It's none of my business; what he does is his choice."

Vic: "So, him sneaking out of the captain's office the other night after sleeping with you is none of your business?"

Andy: "I beg you not to say anything to anyone about that. It was a mistake, and we both know it."

Vic: "The way you both look at each other tells a different story. And the way you both avoid being alone together—it's obvious you know it'll happen again."

Until that moment, Andy hadn't wanted to think about it, and talking to Vic seemed to break her resolve. As tears started to well in her eyes, she said, "Letting him in again—how stupid am I? I thought he was going to leave her, and now this."

That night, she confided in Vic, which only made her more annoyed with Robert. She waited until Vic had fallen asleep before heading back to the station to find him.

Vic: "This isn't any of my business, but it became my business when I had to listen to an upset Herrera. I saw you leave her office early that morning; I know you both haven't spoken about it."

Robert: "Where's this going, Hughes? We haven't spoken about it because there's nothing to discuss. I said something I shouldn't have. Why is she upset?"

Vic: "I don't know. Maybe you'll have to ask her yourself."

Robert's mind wouldn't rest until he had answers. Why did Vic come to him, and what was she not telling him?

Later, she was jolted awake by a knock at the door.

Robert: "I've had Hughes come to me, scolding me about something you said to her. We slept together three months ago, and it hasn't bothered you until now. Why?"

Andy: "Just ignore whatever she said. She saw you leave the office that morning, and now she's asking a lot of questions about why you're leaving and how I feel about it."

Robert: "How do you feel?" he asked.

She looked at him softly as he stared back.

Andy: "I'm happy that you've sorted things out with Natasha and that you're making a new start."

Robert: "You know that's not what I meant."

Andy: "What do you want me to say? That you're making a mistake going, and I want to be with you?"
