"I just think if power is what you want, then I'd only slow you down." She explains angrily as she continued to shove clothes into a bag.
Corvus' heart felt like it was breaking in two as she said those words. The thought of losing her, and the fact that he was the cause of it, was too much for him to bear.
"Wait." He said, his voice strained. "You don't mean that." His voice was almost a plea.
"I don't want to mean it!" She explains then turns to look at his face, "-but I don't even know who you are anymore!" Tears build in her eyes. "You look and sound like my darling yet you're... so different!"
His heart broke even more at the tears in her eyes. He wanted nothing more than to pull her small form into his arms and make everything better. But he couldn't. The power that he had gained, the power that he thought he had wanted... it was tearing them both apart.
He took a step towards Evelyn. "I'm still the same person." He tried to assure her. But even he could hear the lack of conviction in his own voice.
"I'm still your Corvus."
She shakes her head "no...your not," before turning to close her bag, carefully she began to take off the crown he had made for her- a symbol of their equality in power... the lie it covered up.
It took place upon her pillow, then she brought the bag onto her shoulder.
He watched her take off the crown and place it on the pillow. The sight of it sitting there, abandoned, caused a sharp pain in his heart. This was all his fault.
"You really are leaving." He said, his voice barely above a whisper.
He wanted to beg her to stay, to get down on his knees and grovel. But his pride held him back. "Where will you go?"
"I will stay in a tent... or an inn... I don't know-"
She whispers and tried stepping past him.
Corvus stepped in front of her; blocking the path. "You can't be serious." He said, disbelief and anger in his voice. Anger aimed mostly at himself, but some directed towards her.
"You'll sleep in a tent in the middle of the wilderness instead of staying here in luxury with me?" He gestured towards the room, as if to emphasize the stark contrast between his luxurious chambers and a simple tent outdoors.
Evelyn snapped "A tent found me my love, not a fucking pompous Asshole." She steps around and barges past.
The memory hits of them two before all this, sharing a tent, cuddling and talking to each other about their futures together... forever.
Corvus' jaw clenched at her words. A sharp pang of hurt ran through him at the reminder that he had been the one to change. He had become the pompous asshole that he once despied.
But he couldn't let her leave. Not like this.
He put a hand on her arm, stopping from moving past him. "Don't." He said, his voice suddenly pleading. "Don't do this."
"As if you care... now you can focus on your power without love getting in your way," Evelyne manages to say and more tears fall. She barged past him "goodbye... your highness." The use of authority name to show I don't see him as her love anymore.
The coldness in her voice, the way she called him 'your highness,' with contempt, it felt like a dagger to his heart. He had lost her. He had lost the one person who had truly cared for him, all because of his own selfish desires.
He stood there, rooted to the spot, as she left the room. He wanted to go after to beg for forgiveness, to tell her that he loved her...But the damage was done. He had made his choice, and now he had to live with the consequences.
