Sophomore Camp was supposed to be the ultimate adventure for Katie and her friends. They had spent the entire school year looking forward to this summer of fun and freedom at camp. But little did they know, their lives were about to take a dramatic...
Katie waved goodbye as, Jan, her mom's shiny red minivan drove away into the distance.
"Here goes nothing." said Katie as she walked through the sign that said Sophomore Camp.
Katie's mom encouraged her to have a summer of a lifetime so she suggested that Katie should attended Sophomore Summer camp, hoping that Katie would make some meaningful connections before 10th grade began in the fall.
Katie told her mom it was a great idea. Her feelings didn't match her words, but she'd do anything to make her mom happy, after all she's been through. The divorce between her parents had put Jan into a depression.
Katie figured with her being at summer camp and her little brother Brodie being with their father, would give her mom a chance for some self healing.
"Welcome camper!" exclaimed a man wearing a yellow counselors shirt and a blue baseball cap. His cheeks had a reddish glow due to the summer's heat. His name tag red Jojo. " I'm JoJo I'll be one of the two summer camp counselors here at sophomore camp, I hope you're ready for some quality fun, what's your name?" He continued.
"Kate. Katie Hiller." she replied
"Hm, I don't see your name..." he dragged " Oh! Here we go, cabin A13." He said with a smile as he showed Kate the way.
" Here we are. You are assigned to top bunk for bed one, your bunk mate is Meredith Paul." Jojo said before turning to walk away, but then he stopped and looked back at Kate to say "Chow time is at 6pm, don't be late", he said before walking off to assist other campers.
Kate started towards the door as soon as she opened it, she began to cough violently. Kate had asthma, the smell of the dust set her off. She reached into her pocket grabbing her inhaler and took a deep puff before relaxing.
" Jesus! Girl you gave me quite the scare, are you okay?" Kate here a country say to her. " I'm Meredith. You can call me Mer. It's only us, I suppose they filled all the other bunks and we were the odd ones out, how bout that?".
"Hi, I'm Kate, I'm sorry about that. It's just really dusty in here and anything like that will set my asthma off." Kate explained, "What brings you to summer camp?" She asked
" Will I just moved here from Tennessee, and my parents thought this would give me a great opportunity to make some friends." Meredith said with a roll of her eyes.
Why would anybody want to live in Mississippi. Thought Kate. "I understand, I'm here because of my parents as well".
" Well let's go get some dinner girly" Mer said.
The girls began to walk towards the mess hall to eat their dinner. Kate couldn't help, but notice how bubbly Mer seemed to be. She seemed happy. Kate wondered if her own self would ever feel more than just "okay".
For a summer camp, Kate thought it smelled pretty good in there. Kate began to read the menu in the overcrowded cafeteria. Baked chicken with Mac and cheese or cheeseburgers with fries. Kate decided on the chicken and Mer got the cheeseburger.
As the two of them stood together looking around the room for an empty table, they couldn't seem to find one. Then Mer spotted a table in the back corner that was occupied by three guys. One had a short afro and like brown skin, Kate couldn't help but notice how cute he was. Beside him was a boy with blonde hair and another guy with ruffled brown hair.
The two girls walked over to their table and took a seat.
"Hi boys." Mer said confidently. She made it look so easy just talking to peoples Kate was too afraid to speak up in front of groups.
"What's up. I'm Sean this is Chase and Scott." said the one with the afro.
"I'm Mer and this is my bunk mate Kate, thanks for letting us sit with you guys." Mer said sweetly.
"No problem." smiled Sean
After eating the girls went back to their cabin to settle in. Kate walked in first as she began to go toward her bed she hit her foot on something hard.
"Ow shit!". She cursed " What the hell was that? she asked
Meri looked at the floor and said "It looked like a piece of wood is lifting up".
"Let me see." said Kate as she put her hand on the floor. The floor board was loose, but Kate could see something inside the floor. She reached her hand inside and pulled out a dust old wooden box.
The box read Do Not Play.
