Max sat tipped back in her chair, her large, feathered wings stretched out behind her as she counted each steady tick of the clock on the wall. "Thirty-seven..." she mumbled, her brow furrowing slightly in concentration. The sound of approaching footsteps caught her attention, but she didn't seem to really care, her focus remaining on the rhythmic ticking. "Thirty-eight-," Max's piercing blue eyes drifted upwards as the doors to her office suddenly burst open.

A man walked in, an older gentleman with graying hair and a serious expression on his face, who seemed to hesitate for a moment as if questioning if she was the right person. "Max Mayfield?" he spoke, his deep voice filling the room. "Yes, that's me," Max replied evenly, her tone betraying no emotion. He must have been new around here, unfamiliar with her imposing presence and the impressive wings that extended from her back.

"Um, the boss wants me to give you this," he said, pulling a manila folder out from the inside of his black suit jacket. His gaze briefly flickered to her wings, their size and grandeur clearly catching him off guard. "Set it on the desk," she commanded, gesturing with one hand. He did as instructed without another word. "Thank you, you may leave now," Max said, dismissing him with a slight nod of her head.

Max sighed as she opened the folder. Inside were details about her target - an 18-year-old named Jane Ives, with blonde hair and brown eyes. What stood out was that Jane was a princess who fought monsters.

This was different from Max's usual work as she's never done with royalty before - but she was positive the job would be easy.

"Look at you! This is not how a proper princess should behave," her mother scolded sternly. Jane stood in the middle of the grand throne room, her once pristine gown now tattered and torn. A large rip exposed the delicate feathers of the wings her parents had insisted she conceal. Her stockings were shredded, her knees scraped and bruised, her hair a tangled mess.

Even her lip was split, a testament to the skirmish she had been in. "Princesses do not consort with monsters, let alone engage them in combat!" her father bellowed, his face flushed with anger and disappointment.

Jane averted her gaze, cheeks burning with shame. "Well, I'm sorry I cannot be the perfect, obedient princess you want me to be!" she retorted defiantly, before turning on her heel and storming out of the throne room.

Jane finished tending to her minor injuries, using her wand to cast a soothing spell that healed the scrapes on her knees and the split in her lip. As she moved to turn off the light for the night, a sudden knock at the window startled her. Approaching cautiously, she peered outside and recognized the familiar face. "Dustin," she scolded, opening the window.

"Finally! I've been knocking for ages," he said, his distinctive lisp coloring his words. Jane couldn't help but notice his ears twitching, a telltale sign of his agitation. "Oh, your ears are just so adorable when you're riled up like this," she cooed, reaching out to gently touch the pointed tips.

"Cut it out," Dustin huffed, pulling away from her touch. "So what are you doing here?" Jane asked, retracting her hand. "Me and Lucas were wondering if you'd like to come hang out with us tonight...you know, the usual - fighting monsters and all that," he said, punctuating his words with a few enthusiastic jabs through the air.

Jane's expression fell. "I can't, Dustin. My parents are already furious with me after the incident earlier today," she frowned. Dustin's brow furrowed. "Is this about us again?" he asked, exasperation clear in his tone. "I just don't understand what their problem is. Sure, we're monsters, but we're the good guys!"

She shrugged apologetically. "I'm sorry, Dustin. Maybe we can hang out tomorrow instead?" she offered.

Dustin's ears drooped slightly, a sign of his disappointment. "Ah, alright. I guess I'll see you around then," he said, before turning to make his way back out the window the way he had come.

Jane watched as Dustin disappeared into the night, feeling a pang of regret. She knew her parents' strict rules and expectations were a constant source of tension between them. But Dustin and Lucas were her friends - they understood her in a way her family never could.

With a heavy sigh, Jane closed the window and finally turned out the light, resigning herself to another evening confined to her room. As she settled into bed, she couldn't help but wonder what adventures she was missing out on.

Tomorrow, she told herself, she would find a way to sneak out and join Dustin and Lucas. Her parents' rules be damned - she was tired of always having to be the perfect princess.
