"I don't hate you, Minari, I could never hate you."

But his words don't seem to register in my head. We sit side by side on a bench out in front of our high school. The rain's heavier than it's been in a long time, and Seiji holds an umbrella over the both of us.

Our eyes meet only briefly before he looks away towards the horizon.

"It's getting late. I'll walk you home." Seiji says in a monotone pitch, looking out at the setting sun as he rises from his seat and holds my wrist, my hand limp in his clutch. He pulls me up from my seat and throws my arm around his shoulder as we start our walk home.

I've loved Seiji, my best friend, for much longer than I can recall. Can a man really love another man, as a man loves a woman?
