Katie led Salem into her home, where Katie was greeted by her shocked mother standing there.

"Me oh my, oh my! Katie dear is that really you," Katies mother asked while taking a slight step forward towards her daughter.

"Yes mama. It's really me," Katie replied before her mother rushed over pulling Katie into a hug.

"Oh my goodness. My sweet Katie! How I missed you so much. I never thought I would see you again; not after you made the horrible mistake of following Miranda to chase that boy, Vincent. I never did approve of you hanging around that boy, yet you would always defy me, saying that he was a good boy, because Miranda said he was. But the day you came home and told me that Miranda had a crush on that boy, I knew that the trouble was only beginning. And that Miranda had only proven me right when she went to follow that Vincent boy and dragged you along with them to do God knows what," Katie's mom said while pulling away

"I'm sorry I didn't listen to you mama, but I felt like you were constantly smothering me. Whenever I wanted to go and do something, you always had an excuse as to why I couldn't go anywhere," Katie explained.

"I'm sorry I didn't want anything bad to happen to you. Then you and Miranda went and followed that Vincent boy. What became of him anyway," Katies mother asked.

"Mama, you remember how Miranda always talked about how Vincent always wanted to be part of the High Table," Katie asked.

Katie's mother gave her a disapproving look. "Katie, you of all people know your father and I feel about you talking about the High Table in this house. It was the very reason why your father and I banned talking about that horrible organization. Nothing good ever comes from an organization like that. If your father ever hears you speak of that horrible organization, he will go into a flying fit. You know how much he dislikes them."

"Please forgive me mama, but you asked me what happened to Vincent. I am only trying to give you an honest answer. You and papa always told me to be honest," Katie answered.

"I know. As I have mentioned before, talking about that organization nothing good comes from it. But why do you bring it up," Katie's mother asked.

"Mama, Vincent de Gramont has succeeded in joining and getting his dream position that he's always talked about. He's the marquis now," Katie said.

"Oh, Sweet baby girl," Katie's mother began.

"It doesn't stop there. Miranda had wanted to follow Vincent in hopes that she would catch his eye and have him make her his wife. But Vincent not only made her and I servants to clean up after him in his home; he forced an innocent woman to marry him even though she didn't want to. This only angered Miranda. But she found an opportunity to help Salem get out. But Salem refused to leave without me. So, Miranda helped us get out. As to what happened to Miranda after Salem helped me escape, I don't know. Nor do I want to know," Katie said.

Katie's mother turned to Salem. "Thank you for saving my daughter."

"I couldn't leave your daughter behind. When I was first forced to become the marquis's wife, Katie was kind and became my friend right away. I couldn't allow anything bad to happen to her, should I have left her behind," Salem explained. "I take it that you and your husband are going to move away to get as far away from the organization that shall not be named?"

"Of course. I only wait for my husband to return home. Then we are going to get the hell out of here. It would be wise for you to do the same, before something bad happens to you and your own family," Katie's mother said.

"I planned on it. I thank you for giving me a safe place to rest for a moment," Salem said while getting ready to leave, but was stopped by Katie's mother.
