"There has been a terrible four-car pile-up on the expressway going Northbound this afternoon. Five people have been labeled under critical condition including a child. No cause of how the accident occurred. All victims have been transported to Hart-View Medical".
"Damn, that's messed up. Probably someone texting and driving or speeding. If you ask me, some people in general don't need to drive, like old folks it should be a age limit for them". Aaron said turning down the volume on the TV before turning to Mason.
"Hey, Mason, you have a call on line one". Mason's assistant Peyton said as she slightly popped her head in the door.
"Hey Peyton, you are looking mighty fine today". Aaron smiled blowing her a kiss.
"No". She said harshly before closing the door behind her.
"This is Mason Cohen". He placed the cold receiver to his ear.
"Hi, my name is Alina Stapleton. I am calling from Hart-View Medical." Suddenly Mason heart dropped. A worry look took over his face as he sat up in his chair.
"Your wife Scarlett is here; she was one of the victims involved in the pile up today. I went through her phone which astonishingly was not damaged in the wreckage and saw that you were her emergency contact. Can you come down as soon as possible". Without any hesitation, Mason threw the phone down on his desk and grabbed his things and ran towards the front door.
"Mason, is everything ok?" Aaron called out.
"It's Scarlett!" Mason yelled before disappearing into the day.
With his heart beating a million miles a minute and cautiously not trying to throw up todays breakfast, Mason raced to the hospital trying not to think about the worst-case scenario. He doubled parked at the front entrance and ran through the halls panicking looking for the front desk.
"Hi, I um, I got a call that my wife is here. She was a part of the accident today".
"What is your wife's name sir?"
"Her name is Scarlet Cohen".
"She's in surgery right now. I'll call her attending nurse".
"Surgery?" Mason mumbled as he paced back and forth.
"Hi Mr. Cohen. I am nurse Alina. I called you about your wife. She is in surgery. Her left leg was broken in three places. She also has a proximal humerus fracture".
"What, what is that?" Mason began to panic. Sweat was running down his face and underarms like the Nigeria Falls.
"Broken shoulder. Also, there were some bleedings on the brain. But do not worry Dr. Sivan is a miracle worker. Your wife is in good hands".
"Please make sure she pulls through. I cannot lose her. I can't lose my wife". Mason voice cracked as he plead to nurse Alina.
"She's going to be fine. Just calm down. Take a breather. Here, here are her belongings and her phone which has been going off like crazy".
"Thank you. I thank you so much".
Mason sat in the waiting room and began to call Scarlett's parents to let them know what is going on. Her phone went off again and there was a text message from 'Him'. Mason looked confused as the phone went off again. A little taken back about who this person is and why she saved his contact as "Him". Mason and Scarlett were not that type of couple that would roam through each other phones. They agreed that their phones were their phones, and they didn't feel the need snoop through them. They trusted it each other, well Mason thought. But he had to. He opened the message, and his stomach began to do flips once again. He could not believe what he was reading.
